    Archdiocesan memo regarding flu precautions
    By The Catholic Spirit
    Friday, 01 May 2009

The Archdiocese has received a number of inquiries concerning precautions against Type A (H1N1) influenza, because of the heightened level of alert that has been issued by the Center for Disease Control.

We want to provide you with information that may be helpful to you in your parishes and schools. In particular, here are various persons and offices that you may contact for additional information.

If there is a confirmed case of H1N1 flu in your parish or school, please contact Rita Beatty at the Chancery at (651) 251-7742 or our Director of Communications, Dennis McGrath, at (651) 291-4412. Our Schools Office will want to work closely with any principal who is faced with possibility of having to suspend classes.

Those seeking more information should refer to the Minnesota Department of Health website which lists specific precautionary and preventative actions. Instructions can also be found on the website of the Center for Communicable Diseases which is at: http://www.cdc.gov/swineflu/swineflu_you.htm. Or you may call the center at 1-800-232-4636.

Most of the inquiries we have received pertain to adaptations in the Sunday Liturgy, specifically concerning the sign of peace and the distribution of Communion under both forms. At this time, the presumption is still in favor of continuing both practices, on the grounds that each individual member of the assembly will use his or her discretion. Those wishing to be cautious can extend the sign of peace by making a bow of the head or some other gesture in place of shaking hands. Because the whole Christ is present in both forms, it is never required to receive from the common chalice. More developed answers about the flu and the Liturgy can be found on the USCCB website: http://usccb.org/liturgy/swineflu.shtml.
