A health department in western Kentucky is giving college students the first crack at getting vaccinated against swine flu.
The Messenger-Inquirer of Owensboro reports that the Green River District Health Department could offer the vaccine by next week for college students. The newspaper reports that other members of the public might have to wait a couple more weeks.
Regional epidemiologist Janie Cambron said the health department decided to target college students first because the that age group has typically had a high rate of hospitalization and ?college students live in a dormitory, which is a close-contact setting.?
As more vaccines become available, health care workers and elementary and high school-age children will be the next target groups.
