Weather Flu Calls Off PHS Events
Pittsburge Morning Sun 10/2/2009
PITTSBURG ? .The threat of severe weather and illness prompted three events involving Pittsburg High School to be postponed.
On Thursday morning, Pittsburg school officials sent out an e-mail announcing that the cross country meet, slated to be Thursday afternoon at Four Oaks Golf Course, and the Pittsburg soccer match with Carl Junction (Mo.) were both canceled because of the ?threat of severe weather? in the area.
Later in the day, Chanute High School athletic director Eric Methvin said that the Southeast Kansas League triangular with Pittsburg and Coffeyville at Chanute was postponed because of a flu-like illness that has spread throughout the high school.? We?ve had some flu-like symptoms and illness in Chanute,? Methvin said. ?We left the decision to come here up to the schools that were supposed to come here.?
Methvin said that only one of the schools elected to not travel to Chanute because of the flu potential. He would not disclose which school decided not to make the trip.
That prompted Chanute officials to cancel the matches Thursday and look for a later date when it can be made up.
Through the week, Chanute High School has had up to 200 students absent with flu-like symptoms.
?We?ve had a large number of kids out,? Methvin said. ?We were a little bit better today so we are hopping that this has run its course and kids will return to school.?
There as been no makeup dates announced for either the soccer match or cross country race.
