Iowa H1N1 deaths rise to 24
REGISTER STAFF REPORT ? November 20, 2009
Iowa?s death toll from the H1N1 flu virus has risen to 24, the Iowa epartment of Public Health said today.
Three deaths were reported today. They include a child in eastern Iowa, and two adults in Marion and Warren counties. All three had risk factors that increased the chance of complications from the virus, health officials said.
There have been more than 650 Iowans hospitalized because of the H1N1 virus to date, state officials said.

Although H1N1 flu illnesses have declined in recent weeks, state authorities continue to report more deaths from the new disease.
This afternoon, the Iowa Department of Public Health reported three more deaths, bringing the state's total to 33.
The health department said the new deaths were all adults with other health problems that made them susceptible to the flu. They were in Benton, Franklin and Polk counties.
The victims? names, ages and dates of death were not released. Eight of the state?s H1N1 deaths have been in Polk County. All but one of the 33 deaths have been among adults, and most reportedly have had other health issues, such as diabetes, asthma or obesity.
Health department officials said it sometimes takes a few weeks to confirm the cause of death in H1N1 cases.
H1N1 illnesses and hospitalizations have waned recently, but authorities warn that another wave could come later this winter. They continue to urge people to seek vaccinations as soon as possible. The vaccine has been scarce, but supplies have been increasing in recent weeks. At this point, most counties are offering it to pregnant women; anyone 6 months to 24 years old; health-care workers; people younger than 65 who have chronic health problems; and people who care for children younger than 6 months. Iowans are urged to contact their county health departments to check on availability of the vaccine.
Week 48: 35 deaths since 9/1/2009 / 36 total (details of deaths on website)
"Influenza activity is remaining steady at the local activity level. Outpatient provider visits are at the threshold for the
third consecutive week. Notable in this week?s report is the drop in the positive predictive value in the rapid antigen
test. This may be due to the overall decline in influenza illness. Also important is the increase in children with
positive RSV rapid test results, indicating RSV activity is increasing in the state. School absence remains below
threshold and is not expected to increase until after holiday break."
Week 50
"Iowa activity level: Sporadic
Persons hospitalized with lab‐confirmed
2009 H1N1 influenza since 9/1/09: 529
Number of deaths reported due to 2009
H1N1 influenza since 9/1/09: 38 (one of these deaths was before 9/01)
Hospitalizations have increased slightly, with all cases still being attributed to 2009 H1N1 infection. All other influenza activity indicators continue at sporadic prevalence in the state."
Page 6 of report lists deaths: adult/child, county and date
