Surge in Ind. flu deaths prompts Marion County to impose limits on hospital visitors

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) ? Indiana's recent surge in flu-related deaths has prompted Marion County to impose temporary restrictions on who can visit Indianapolis-area hospitals.

The limits announced Friday came as state health officials announced that the number of Indiana influenza deaths this season had jumped to 11, up from three reported a week ago.

One of those deaths was in Marion County.

    Flu outbreak concerns local hospitals

St. Joseph Hospital and Community Howard Regional Health will meet today to discuss whether to place restrictions on visitors to prevent spreading the flu. A recent outbreak has resulted in 11 influenza-related deaths in Indiana, up from three reported a couple of weeks ago.

St. Joseph Hospital and Community Howard Regional Health collaborate when deciding to impose visiting restrictions, said St. Joseph Hospital spokeswoman Sandy Herman. No restrictions are currently in place.

?Our clinical folks keep an eye on the number of cases in the community and know the right threshold to implement (visiting) restrictions,? Herman said. ?The community and our associates trump everything when making these decisions. We?re aware that imposing restrictions does cause inconveniences, so we don?t want to impose them too soon or do it too late.?
