Largest medical group in Idaho reports ‘explosion’ of flu cases in the Boise area

The largest independent medical group in Idaho says it’s seeing an ”explosion” of influenza cases in the Boise area.
Primary Health Medical Group, which has two dozen urgent care clinics in the Treasure Valley, including several in Boise, said in a news release Tuesday that its clinics are reporting a positivity rate of nearly 50%, meaning that half of those tested for the flu have positive results. The positivity rate is a useful metric for understanding the prevalence of an illness in a given community. Public health experts say a positivity rate of 5% or less indicates control of the spread.

“We’ve had an explosion of flu in recent weeks, increasing to 525 weekly cases around the first of the year,” Primary Health Clinical Director Dr. Ann Weiss said in the release.

“Wastewater levels are also high for influenza A.” The wastewater dashboard for Ada County shows a massive spike in flu cases beginning in December that surpassed the peak the area saw last winter.

Southwest District Health confirmed its first flu-related death last week in Canyon County, in a woman over the age of 50, bringing the total number of flu-related deaths in Idaho this season to eight, the Idaho Statesman previously reported.

Rhinovirus cases on the rise in the Magic Valley


TWIN FALLS, Idaho (KMVT/KSVT) — It’s cold and flu season, so it’s essential to take precautions to keep yourself safe from illness, this includes the Rhinovirus.

The Rhinovirus is a member of the typical cold family, and it thrives during this time of year, among other illnesses such as Flu and COVID. Daniel Winward, a physician’s assistant for St. Luke’s, said when people come into the hospital, they test for illnesses like flu and COVID. Those results can also give them an idea of the prevalence of Rhinovirus in the area.

“We have access to what the local community averages are with positive testing with St. Luke’s. So 9% is Rhinovirus,” Winward said.

First flu-related death of the season reported in eastern Idaho


POCATELLO — Southeastern Idaho Public Health has confirmed an influenza-related death in Health District 6, marking Idaho’s second flu death of the season. The person who died was a man in his 50s.

Health officials expressed condolences to the man’s family and emphasized the importance of taking steps to prevent further spread of the virus.

Last flu season, Idaho reported 87 influenza-related deaths.

50-year-old Idaho man dies from Flu as officials urge immediate vaccination

IDAHO FALLS, Idaho (KIFI) — Health Officials are urgently promoting Idahoans to get vaccinated against the flu after a 50-year-old Southeast Idaho man died from influenza-related illness. Southeastern Idaho Public Health officials announced the death on Friday afternoon, Dec. 12, expressing their condolences to the family of the man.

This marks the second influenza-associated death of the season in the Gem State. Last flu season, 87 people were reported to have died from flu-related illnesses in Idaho.
