  • 2nd swine flu death in Indian River County

NDIAN RIVER COUNTY, FL — A 49-year-old man is the county’s second swine flu-related death since the unique strain of influenza began circulating a year ago, Health Department officials announced Thursday.

Most cases of H1N1 flu have been mild, but children, pregnant women and adults with underlying health conditions were at greater risk of complications from the virus. The majority of H1N1-related deaths have been in people ages 50 to 64.

Eighty percent of those people had some other health condition, including lung diseases such as asthma, diabetes or heart disease.

The H1N1 vaccine, which was in short supply through the fall and winter, still is available at the Indian River County Health Department or the Gifford Health Center. There is no charge for the vaccine.
