    Week 46: Sporadic

    ED ILI increased to 4.1% statewide this week.
    ILI: Tracking over the previous two seasons, increasing during the past five weeks and has now exceeded 0.9 % statewide

    Current level of pneumonia admissions represents approximately 4.2% of the total statewide hospital admissions.

    A total of 5 persons hospitalized with influenza-associated illness have been reported to date. Four were identified with Type B influenza and one with Type A (subtype unspecified) influenza.

    A total of 49 positive influenza test reports were identified in individuals residing in 5 of the 8 Connecticut counties including: Fairfield (30), New Haven (8), New London (5), Hartford (4), and Middlesex (2). These 49 positive influenza reports include: 5 Type A (H3N2), 14 Type A (subtype unspecified), 15 influenza B viruses, and 15 of unknown type.

    The current level of pneumonia admissions represents approximately 4.8% of the total statewide hospital admissions.
    A total of 10 persons hospitalized with influenza-associated illness have been reported to date. Five were identified with Type A (subtype unspecified) influenza and five with Type B influenza.

    A total of 59 positive influenza test reports were identified in individuals residing in 7 of the 8 Connecticut counties including: Fairfield (32), New Haven (13), New London (6), Hartford (4), Middlesex (2), Tolland (1), and Windham (1). These 59 positive influenza reports include: 6 Type A (H3N2), 20 Type A (subtype unspecified), 16 influenza B viruses, and 17 of unknown type.

        The percentage of total emergency department visits attributed to the “fever/flu” syndrome category has been generally increasing since mid-November and has remained above 4.8% statewide during the last few weeks.

        The percentage of outpatient visits with influenza-like illness (% ILI) has been generally increasing since early November and has remained at or above 0.8% statewide during the last several weeks.

        The percentage of statewide admissions attributed to the “pneumonia” syndrome has varied considerably during the past four weeks following a six week period of general increase. The current level of pneumonia admissions represents approximately 4.2% of the total statewide hospital admissions.
        A total of 16 persons hospitalized with influenza-associated illness have been reported to date. Five were identified with Type A (H3N2) influenza, five with TypeA (subtype unspecified) influenza, and six with Type B influenza.

        A total of 101 positive influenza test reports were identified in individuals residing in7 of the 8 Connecticut counties including: Fairfield (45), New Haven (25), Hartford (13), New London (8), Middlesex (6), Tolland (2), and Windham (2). These 101 positive influenza reports include: 18 Type A (H3N2), 34 Type A (subtype unspecified), 23 influenza B viruses, and 26 of unknown type.

          The percentage of total emergency department visits attributed to the “fever/flu” syndrome category has been generally increasing during the past five weeks to its current high level of 6.1% statewide.

          The percentage of statewide admissions attributed to the “pneumonia” syndrome has increased during the past two weeks. The current level of pneumonia admissions represents approximately 5.1% of the total statewide hospital admissions.

          A large increase in persons hospitalized with influenza-associated illness has been reported during the past two weeks. Of the 81 flu-associated hospitalizations reported to date, 22 were identified with Type A (H3N2) influenza, 1 with Type A (2009 H1N1), 40 with Type A (subtype unspecified) influenza, and 18 with Type B influenza.

          A large increase in positive influenza reports were also received during the past two weeks. To date, a total of 412 reports were identified in individuals residing in all 8 Connecticut counties: New Haven (130), Fairfield (106), Hartford (71), Windham (28), Middlesex (26), New London (22), Tolland (19), and Litchfield (10). These 412 positive influenza reports include: 97 Type A (H3N2), 2 Type A (2009 H1N1), 197 Type A (subtype unspecified), 69 influenza B viruses, and 47 of unknown type.

            The percentage of outpatient visits with influenza-like illness has been generally increasing for the past eight weeks to its current level of 1.8%.

            The percentage of statewide admissions attributed to the ?pneumonia? syndrome has increased during the past three weeks. The current level of pneumonia admissions represents approximately 5.8% of the total statewide hospital admissions.

            A large increase in persons hospitalized with influenza-associated illness has been reported during the past three weeks. Of the 113 flu-associated hospitalizations reported to date, 28 were identified with Type A (H3N2) influenza, 1 with Type A (2009 H1N1), 65 with Type A (subtype unspecified) influenza, and 19 with Type B influenza.

            A large increase in positive influenza reports were also received during the past three weeks. To date, a total of 606 reports were identified in individuals residing in all 8 Connecticut counties: New Haven (173), Fairfield (148), Hartford (114), Windham (76), Middlesex (28), New London (26), Tolland (24), and Litchfield (17). These 606 positive influenza reports include: 196 Type A (H3N2), 5 Type A (2009 H1N1), 240 Type A (subtype unspecified), 91 influenza B viruses, and 74 of unknown type.

              The percentage of statewide admissions attributed to the ?pneumonia syndrome? has increased during the past four weeks. The current level of pneumonia admissions represents approximately 7.8% of the total statewide hospital admissions.

              A large increase in persons hospitalized with influenza-associated illness has been reported during the past four weeks. Of the 157 flu-associated hospitalizations reported to date, 35 were identified with Type A (H3N2) influenza, 1 with Type A (2009 H1N1), 101 with Type A (subtype unspecified) influenza, and 20 with Type B influenza.

              A large increase in positive influenza reports were also received during the past three weeks. To date, a total of 1,023 reports were identified in individuals residing in all 8 Connecticut counties: Fairfield (275), New Haven (273), Hartford (204), Windham (93), Middlesex (57), New London (56), Litchfield (35), and Tolland (30). These 1,023 positive influenza reports include: 274 Type A (H3N2), 5 Type A (2009 H1N1), 482 Type A (subtype unspecified), 117 influenza B viruses, and 145 of unknown type.

                ILI: 3.5%. Data from the previous two seasons generally did not exceed 2%.

                The percentage of statewide admissions attributed to the ?pneumonia syndrome? has increased during the past five weeks. The current level of pneumonia admissions, representing approximately 9.3% of the total statewide hospital admissions, is higher than that of the previous two seasons, which generally did not exceed 6%.

                A large increase in persons hospitalized with influenza-associated illness has been reported during the past five weeks. Of the 332 flu-associated hospitalizations reported to date, 55 were identified with Type A (H3N2) influenza, 1 with Type A (2009 H1N1), 244 with Type A (subtype unspecified) influenza, 31 with Type B, and one unknown type influenza.

                A large increase in positive influenza reports were also received during the past three weeks. To date, a total of 1,680 reports were identified in individuals residing in all 8 Connecticut counties: New Haven (453), Fairfield (451), Hartford (308), Windham (151), Middlesex (119), New London (85), Litchfield (62), and Tolland (49). These 1,680 positive influenza reports include: 351 Type A (H3N2), 8 Type A (2009 H1N1), 983 Type A (subtype unspecified), 158 influenza B viruses, and 179 of unknown type.

                  ED ILI: 11.2% This current level is higher that observed during the previous two seasons, which did not exceed 8%. However, the current level is similar to the peak of the 2007-2008 season, the last season when flu A (H3N2) was the predominant virus in circulation. The early onset of flu activity during this current season is also apparent in these data.

                  ILI: 4.6%. Data from the previous two seasons generally did not exceed 2%. However, the current level is less than the peak of the 2007-2008 season, which peaked at 9%.

                  The total number of statewide admissions attributed to the “pneumonia syndrome” had been increasing during the past five weeks but decreased during week 2 to its current level of 564 admissions. This level is higher than that of the previous two seasons as well as the 2007-2008 season, which generally did not exceed 500 pneumonia admissions.

                  A large increase in persons hospitalized with influenza-associated illness has been reported during the past six weeks. Of the 467* flu-associated hospitalizations reported to date*, 84 were identified with Type A (H3N2) influenza, 1 with Type A (2009 H1N1), 345 with Type A (subtype unspecified) influenza, 36 with Type B, andone unknown type influenza. A total of six influenza associated deaths have been reported to the DPH. All reported deaths were of individuals greater than 65 years of age.

                  A large increase in positive influenza reports were also received during the past six weeks. To date, a total of 2,456* reports were identified in individuals residing in all 8 Connecticut counties: Fairfield (691), New Haven (629), Hartford (456), Middlesex(208), Windham (179), New London (132), Litchfield (96), and Tolland (65). These 2,456 positive influenza reports include: 626 Type A (H3N2), 10 Type A (2009 H1N1), 1,369 Type A (subtype unspecified), 188 influenza B viruses, and 263 of unknown type.
                  * Please note that the total number of flu-associated hospitalizations and laboratory-confirmed flu reports for weeks 52, 1, and 2 will increase as delayed reports are received and analyzed.

                      A large increase in persons hospitalized with influenza-associated illness has been reported during the past five weeks. The current total of 1,522 includes a number of delayed reports of hospitalized patients with laboratory-confirmed influenza. While these flu associated hospitalizations appeared to have peaked during week 1, additional delayed reported from weeks 2, 3 & 4 may be forthcoming and will be included in next week?s report.

                        4 new adult deaths; total 27 (23 were of individuals greater than 65 years of age, with four reported deaths in individuals between 55-64 years of age.)

                        ED ILI: 8.4%. These current levels are higher that observed during the previous two seasons, which did not exceed 8%. However, these recent levels of fever/flu emergency department visits are similar to the peak of the 2007-2008 season, the last season when flu A (H3N2) was the predominant virus in circulation.

                        The percentage of outpatient visits with influenza-like illness has decreased during the last few weeks from a peak of 4.6% to its current level of 3.3%. Data from the previous two seasons generally did not exceed 2%. However, the current levels are less than the peak of the 2007-2008 season, which peaked at 9%. The early onset of flu activity during this current season is also apparent in these data.

                        The total number of statewide admissions attributed to the “pneumonia syndrome” had been increasing to a peak of 696 during week 1, but decreased during the last four weeks to its current level of 446 admissions. The total pneumonia admissions for weeks 52, 1, & 2 are higher than that of the previous two seasons as well as the 2007-2008 season, which generally did not exceed 500 admissions.

                        A large increase in persons hospitalized with influenza-associated illness had been reported during late December 2012 and January 2013. The current total of 1,654 includes a number of delayed reports of hospitalized patients with laboratory-confirmed influenza. While these flu associated hospitalizations appeared to have peaked during week 1, additional delayed reported from weeks 3, 4 & 5 may be forthcoming and will be included in next week’s report.

                        A large increase in laboratory-confirmed influenza reports occurred in late December 2012 and January 2013. Many hundreds of additional reports from recent weeks are expected to be received and analyzed during the coming weeks. To date, a total of 4,230 reports were identified in individuals residing in all 8 Connecticut counties: Fairfield (1,142), New Haven (1,006), Hartford (847), Middlesex (330), Windham (306), New London (281), Tolland (161), and Litchfield (157). These 4,230 positive influenza reports include: 1,063 Type A (H3N2), 20 Type A (2009 H1N1), 2,503 Type A (subtype unspecified), 309 influenza B viruses, and 335 of unknown type.
