Solano County confirms first flu-related death for 2019-20 season

Solano County public health officials have confirmed the first influenza-associated death of an adult in the county for the 2019-2020 influenza season.
“We offer our deepest sympathies to the individual’s loved ones,” said Solano County Health Officer Dr. Bela Matyas, in a county news release. “This personal loss is a reminder that flu can be a serious illness. We encourage residents to protect themselves and others during this flu season by getting a flu shot.”

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Seven more deaths due to complications from influenza have been reported in San Diego County over the last week.
Local health officials said the cases bring San Diego's season death toll to 39. Last week, 1,880 cases were reported, which is 380 fewer than the previous week.

Nancy Marquez told 10News Friday her husband, Florentino, is still hospitalized with the flu, which he has been battling since the beginning of the year.
Marquez says her husband's symptoms started lingering for several days beginning around New Year's Eve. Then on Jan. 8, they went to the hospital where Florentino was immediately admitted to the ICU with pneumonia and a failing kidney.

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Eleven influenza-related deaths were confirmed last week in San Diego County, bringing the number of fatalities so far this flu season to 50, compared to 24 at this time last year, the Health and Human Services Agency reported Wednesday.
The ages of the patients ranged from 53 to 80, and all had underlying medical conditions, according to the HHSA.

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Seven influenza-related deaths were confirmed last week in San Diego County, bringing the number of fatalities so far this flu season to 57, compared to 30 at this time last year, the Health and Human Services Agency reported Wednesday.
The ages of the patients ranged from 60 to 89, and all had underlying medical conditions, according to the HHSA.
The total number of cases dropped for the third week in a row. The county logged 1,548 cases last week, compared to 1,689 the week before.

More people have been killed this flu season in San Joaquin County that during the same period of time last year.
According to the most recent numbers released by the San Joaquin County Department of Public Health, 10 people have died of the flu this season – which officially began during the 40th week of last year – compared to only 8 through the same time period, which was measured through Feb. 5.

Last year through Feb. 5, all eight of the people who were killed by the flu were between 18 and 64 years old. This year, only two people from that age range have succumb to the effects of the illness – with seven victims being over the age of 65, and one under the age of 18.

Cellphone video captured a smiling Brian Finete, 19, surprising his mother with flowers for her birthday last Tuesday night at their home in Clairemont.
"The moment was special. He was always a happy boy with a big heart. He loved life and always wanted to make people happy," said Maria Finete.
Later that night, Finete played Xbox all night with his friend at his home. Just past 4 a.m., he went to the bathroom. About two hours later, the friend woke up and went looking for him. Finete was found collapsed in the bathroom...

Six more flu-related deaths have been reported this season, the San Diego County Health and Human Services Agency announced Wednesday, as the county works to secure financial resources for possible coronavirus cases.
The season’s total number of flu deaths has reached 63, officials confirmed. The ages of the six new flu deaths ranged from 55 to 84, and the patients all had underlying medical conditions. Comparatively by this time last year, there were 35 flu-related deaths.

Kern County Public Health has confirmed that there has now been seven flu-related deaths here in Kern County. Influenza, commonly known as the flu, is a contagious respiratory illness that is caused by a virus. Symptoms of the illness include fever, cough, sore throat, chills, fatigue, body aches, and headache. Illness can range from mild to severe and can result in hospitalization or death. According to public health, there are two types of flu strains this flu season a Type A and Type B.
