Tulare County reports first swine flu death

    Staff Reports ? October 23, 2009

A Visalia man who died this week was the first Tulare County resident to die of the H1N1 virus, also known as the swine flu, county health officials reported.

The death was reported to county officials Wednesday but was not made public until this afternoon.

Officials withheld the man?s name and age to protect his family?s privacy.

Officials described the man as ?young? and said he had pre-existing health conditions, for which he was being treated. Officials would not say what those health conditions were.

Since April, 75 Tulare County residents have been hospitalized for treatment of the H1N1 flu strain.

Free vaccinations for H1N1 will be offered Saturday in Visalia to children ages 2 through 9 and adults who are caretakers of infants under 6 months. The vaccinations will be administered from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.. at the Visalia Health Center, 2611 N. Dinuba Blvd.
