Swine Flu Claims Eighth County Resident

Latest Victim a 20-30 Year Old Male

    Saturday, September 12, 2009

San Bernardino, CA - The H1N1 virus (so-called Swine Flu) has claimed the life of another San Bernardino County resident, bringing the total deaths to eight.

San Bernardino County public health officials declined to provide the name, city of residence or date the 20 to 30-year-old male died. The 400-pound male reportedly had several pre-existing medical conditions at the time of his passing.

In California, 1,806 individuals have been hospitalized with the virus and 152 people have died.

Spokesperson Dr. Maxwell Ohikhuare suggests that county residents should cover their mouths when they cough or sneeze, wash their hands frequently and avoid contact with sick individuals.

He said the latest fatality seems to fit a pattern in which most of the victims suffered from previous medical problems that may have increased their probability of becoming infected with the virus.

    Additional Information

The County's Public Health Department will continue to closely monitor the situation and will provide more information to the public, as needed. For more information on H1N1 Influenza A virus infection, call the department at (800) 782-4264.
