RANCHO CUCAMONGA ? Dozens of West Valley Detention Center inmates have been quarantined as officials confirm at least seven have the H1N1 virus, more commonly known as the swine flu.

Nurses at the detention center reported several inmates had come down with flu-like symptoms on Saturday, San Bernardino County Sheriff?s Department officials said on Thursday.

?The jail staff and nurses attacked the problem aggressively and, as of Wednesday night, none of the inmates had any fevers,? said Jodi Miller, spokeswoman for the Sheriff?s Department.

The 48 inmates are being housed in Unit 8 because its ventilation system does not circulate to the rest of the facility, according to Miller.

San Bernardino County Department of Public Health was immediately notified and 47 inmates were given the medication Tamiflu. Miller said one inmate refused the treatment.

Both inmates and staff were educated in the need to cover their mouths and noses when they coughed or sneezed, told to frequently wash their hands and to not share certain items.

According to Miller, no staff member has complained of any flu-like symptoms. The duration of the quarantine was not immediately known.
