Re: Possible First 2 US Deaths

You have to make your own decision based on what you think is right for your family.

I personally will not be changing my families schedule at this time. But I am always reminding my kids that they need to wash their hands often and not touch their face.
"We are in this breathing space before it happens. We do not know how long that breathing space is going to be. But, if we are not all organizing ourselves to get ready and to take action to prepare for a pandemic, then we are squandering an opportunity for our human security"- Dr. David Nabarro

Re: Possible First 2 US Deaths

I strongly suspect we have had swine flu circulating in the U.S. for weeks. No one was looking for the disease so it is little wonder in hindsight we may have missed some cases.

If you haven't already done so now is a good time to figure out what you and your family is going to do in response. Your personal decision will be based on a number of criteria. Only you know what resources you have available and what level of risk you are willing to tolerate.

ops144, I doubt we have missed a significant number of cases. A sudden jump in the number of flu fatalities would have sent epidemiologists into searching for the answers as to why the abrupt uptick.

The key factor here is the AGES of the suspected deaths.

California Declares State of Emergency Over Swine Flu

Gov. Schwarzenegger declares a state of emergency that will allow federal funding to combat an outbreak of swine flu in California, which could be the first state to link a fatality to the virus.

              Tuesday, April 28, 2009

California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger declared a state of emergency Tuesday to respond to the swine flu outbreak after two fatalities in Los Angeles were being investigated for possible links to the virus.

The declaration is accompanied by a request for federal funds to cover enactment of emergency "services, materials, personnel and equipment to supplement extraordinary preventive measures being taken across the state."

The declaration comes as President Obama requested that Congress approve $1.5 billion in supplemental funds to "enhance capability" to address the spread of the outbreak, including the development of anti-viral stocks.

California's proclamation orders all state agencies and departments to assist the Department of Public Health and the State Emergency Plan as coordinated by the California Emergency Management Agency.

In making the declaration, Schwarzenegger announced that the state now joins the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in conducting its own testing of virus samples obtained from patients with symptoms resembling the swine flu.

Los Angeles Coroner's spokesman Craig Harvey told the Los Angeles Times that a hospital in Bellflower, Calif., reported the death of a 33-year-old Long Beach man who was brought in Saturday with symptoms resembling swine flu. The other death was a 45-year-old La Mirada man who died April 22 at a Norwalk, Calif., hospital.

California is the first state where a case of swine flu was confirmed. The governor's office said state health officials are working closely with the federal government and local health partners to find measures to reduce the virus' spread and wider impact.

City Health Commissioner Thomas Frieden also said Tuesday that "many hundreds" of schoolchildren are sick with suspected cases of swine flu.

Bloomberg says the hospitalizations are separate from the outbreak at a private school in Queens

SFgator, I think bedavis007 was merely clarifying the extent of normal influenza deaths. You are talking about the abnormal phenomena of a flu new (novel) to humanity. When that happens it is a whole new ball game. Instead of a typical inverted bell curve of deaths, we see a W curve. The old and the very young die but, so too do people we do not expect to succumb to flu who are fit and extremely healthy.

Coroner says swine flu ruled out in 1 California death
                                39 minutes ago
LOS ANGELES ? Swine flu has been ruled out as the cause of one of two recent deaths being investigated by the Los Angeles County coroner's office.
Coroner's Assistant Chief Ed Winter says swine flu was not found in a La Mirada man. Winter says lab testing is pending in the case of a Long Beach man but swine flu is now not suspected. Both deaths were reported to the coroner's office on Monday. Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger has declared a state of emergency to help California agencies co-ordinate efforts in response to the outbreak of swine flu.
However, he cautioned that "there is no need for alarm."
"We are taking strong and swift action to limit the spread of the virus and to minimize its effects," Schwarzenegger said at a news conference Tuesday.
California has 11 confirmed cases of swine flu, said Dr. Mark Horton, director of the state Department of Public Health.
