Nearly 1M chickens test positive for bird flu at Darke County egg producer
Excerpt:
The National Veterinary Services Laboratory confirmed HPAI (highly pathogenic avian influenza) Friday involving 931,302 commercial layers, the Ohio Department of Agriculture reported.
The ODA did not identify the egg producer because it is an active case.
When HPAI is detected, ODA quarantines the facility, where all the birds at the location are culled to prevent the spread of the disease. The agriculture department also sets up a control area and surveillance zone to monitor other facilities nearby

Almost a million chickens at an Ohio farm tested positive for bird flu. What to know
1/3/25
Nearly a million chickens tested positive for bird flu at an Ohio farm, according to the Ohio Department of Agriculture in December.
And officials are assuming reports of dead Canada geese, trumpeter swans, and a mallard duck across 11 Ohio counties, including Warren, means that bird flu has reached wild bird populations as well.

The farm in Darke County is one of two areas in Ohio under active quarantine for bird flu, according to a dashboard last updated in December by the Animal Health and Plant Inspection service, a federal agency run by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, or USDA. The second area quarantined 110 poultry in Greene County, which borders Dayton.

DARKE/MERCER COUNTIES — Nearly 4 million new cases of High Path Avian Influenza, otherwise known as bird flu, have been confirmed in the Miami Valley over the last few days.
Over 3.7 million commercial chickens and more than 86,000 commercial turkeys in Darke and Mercer counties were confirmed positive for bird flu by the National Veterinary Services Laboratory in 10 reports on Jan. 23 and Jan. 24, according to the Ohio Department of Agriculture (ODA).
More than 1.9 million birds have been “depopulated.” ODA’s procedure is to quarantine the impacted facility and to depopulate, or kill, the birds to prevent the disease from spreading.
ODA’s report indicates that the process of depopulating the remaining 1.8 million birds is ongoing.
Another 190,000 commercial chickens have been depopulated in Darke County, but is unclear if they tested positive for bird flu, according to ODA’s report.
As reported by News Center 7, 1.9 million commercial chickens and 72,282 commercial turkeys in Darke and Mercer counties have already been depopulated in January.
