BIRD FLU HITS NJ: Avian Flu Outbreak Suspected In Widespread Deaths Across Garden State
        1/8
Multiple wild bird fatalities, predominantly among snow geese, have been reported across New Jersey this week, with avian influenza suspected as the cause.

Preliminary in-state testing has indicated presumptive positive results for H5 avian influenza in seven snow geese, two Canada geese, and two hawks recovered from Warren, Middlesex, Morris, and Sussex Counties. Additional animals from various sites in southern New Jersey are currently undergoing testing.

North Jersey wastewater sample tests positive for bird flu.
        Wed, January 8, 2025

A wastewater sample from the Passaic Valley Sewerage Commission tested positive for H5 bird flu this week, according to WastewaterSCAN, a monitoring program based at Stanford University.

The positive test from a Jan. 6 sample comes amid a national rise in cases of H5N1 avian flu, which has been evident in New Jersey mostly through high egg prices at the market. No active outbreaks in poultry or livestock have been reported in New Jersey, which sits along major migratory bird routes. However, the virus has had significant impacts elsewhere.

          NJ Department of Environmental Protection

          January 17, 2025
          Excerpts:

The current active outbreak in wild birds began at the end of December. Since then, more than 140 sick or dead snow geese and Canada geese, as well as lower numbers of raptors and other avian scavengers, have been reported from more than 30 locations in the state. Clusters of five or more have been reported in Atlantic, Cape May, Cumberland, Salem and Warren counties. Of these wild birds, 11 have non-negative testing results awaiting federal confirmatory testing.

The Department of Agriculture regularly tests backyard flocks and live bird markets around the state. Last year the department tested more than 3,800 backyard flocks and performed testing in 43 live bird markets for HPAI. There have been no positive tests for HPAI through 2024 and thus far this year.

HARMONY TOWNSHIP, NJ (Warren County) – Merrill Creek Reservoir (MCR), located in Harmony Township, has temporarily suspended public access to its facilities, including the visitor center, following confirmed cases of the Bird Flu virus (H5N1). This precautionary measure aims to protect the health and safety of visitors. ...

Several dead or sick birds were observed at MCR, prompting the staff to report the findings to the New Jersey Division of Fish & Wildlife (NJDFW) and the U.S. Department of Agriculture Animal & Plant Health Inspection Service (USDA-APHIS) for further evaluation. NJDFW has since confirmed that the virus was detected in the birds found at the reservoir. ...

N.J. park to remain closed after avian flu is suspected in geese deaths

Two parks and a portion of another in a New Jersey borough are closed indefinitely after dozens of Canadian geese appeared dead around those sites over the past three weeks.

The recreational areas in Allentown, Dr. Farmer’s Park, Pete Sensi Park and a portion of Heritage Park, will remain closed after some 30 dead geese were removed over the weekend, Mayor Thomas Fritts said Tuesday.

The deaths come amid the avian influenza being suspected in over 100 wild bird fatalities in the state over the past month. The sightings have prompted officials to caution the public against direct contact with geese without protective gear.

PEMBERTON, NJ — A dead goose in Burlington County tested positive for H5N1 avian influenza, marking the county's first-known case of bird flu strain, officials said Thursday.

The wild Canada goose was found dead in Pemberton earlier this month. It was with other wild geese, according to the Burlington County Health Department.

State environmental officials tested the bird as part of New Jersey's avian-influenza monitoring. The county health department was notified Wednesday evening about the presumed positive test...

Officials in New Jersey are warning residents after H5N1 avian influenza was discovered in dead wild geese in Burlington and Monmouth counties
By Hayden Mitman • Published 5 hours ago • Updated 28 mins ago

Health officials in New Jersey are warning residents after H5N1 avian influenza -- or bird flu -- was found in dead wild Canada geese in Burlington and Monmouth counties recently.

In Burlington County, officials said bird flu was found in a dead goose that was recovered from a location in Pemberton.

Here, officials said, the bird was found with other dead geese and it was tested as part of a monitoring program.

Officials said that this positive test marks the first confirmed case of highly pathogenic avian influenza in Burlington County since the nationwide outbreak started in 2022.

Earlier this month, in Monmouth County, the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection closed Dr. Farmer's Park, Pete Sensi Park, and Heritage Park until further notice after dead geese found at the millpond and surrounding areas in Allentown Borough tested positive for bird flu...
