Sick waterfowl reported on Bighorn River, public urged to stay cautious
HARDIN, Mont. – Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks said the department has received reports of sick and dead waterfowl along the Bighorn River, stretching from Afterbay to the I-90 bridge near Hardin.
FWP suspects the cause is Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza. Staff have collected carcasses for testing at FWP’s Wildlife Health Lab in Bozeman, though results may take a few days.

FWP advises the public to avoid contact with sick or dead wildlife and to prevent pets from interacting with affected birds or their droppings. Domestic poultry owners should maintain strict biosecurity to avoid contact between their birds and wild ones.
If you encounter five or more sick or dead wild birds outside the specified Bighorn River area, contact the Billings FWP office at 406-247-2940 or the Wildlife Health Program in Bozeman at 406-577-7880. Report sick or dead domestic birds to the Montana Department of Livestock at 406-444-2976.

BILLINGS –After extensive testing, Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks has concluded that the death of a large number of waterfowl on the Bighorn River in February was caused by starvation.
In February, FWP staff collected mallard, geese and shorebird carcasses from Afterbay to about three miles downstream of the Bighorn Fishing Access Site. The carcasses were transported to FWP’s Wildlife Health Lab in Bozeman for Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) testing. All carcasses tested negative for HPAI.
Following these negative results, the waterfowl carcasses were sent to the U.S. Geological Survey’s National Wildlife Health Center (NWHC) in Wisconsin for further testing and investigation. No evidence of infectious diseases was detected. Emaciation and starvation were the only consistent ailments found in all sampled carcasses.
FWP’s mid-winter waterfowl surveys for the Bighorn River, conducted in early January, showed higher than average waterfowl numbers, which likely lead to more competition for the limited food in the area. Early 2025 brought extreme cold temperatures and large amounts of snowfall to the region, making the search for food even more challenging.
