    The Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries today took measures to temporarily suspend imports of live poultry, poultry meat, etc. from the state of Minnesota in the United States of America (hereinafter referred to as the "US"). 1. Background

    Today (Tuesday, October 23, Heisei 30), the US government reported that the occurrence of low-pathogenic avian influenza (H5N2 subtype) was confirmed on the turkey farm in Minnesota State, USA. 2. Supported

    Today, we temporarily suspended imports of living poultry, poultry meat, etc from the state of Minnesota, the United States, in order to take all possible precautions to prevent invasion of the same disease into our country .

    Epidemiological comments Following the 2015 highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) outbreak that occurred in central Minnesota, increased surveillance has been implemented during the spring and fall months. This routine surveillance detected a low pathogenic avian influenza (LPAI) H5N2 in a commercial meat-type turkey flock. The flock was healthy and not showing any clinical signs of AI. Partial HA/NA sequencing determined the H5 and N2 to be a low pathogenic virus of North American wild bird lineage. Further characterization is pending virus recovery. The Minnesota Board of Animal Health (BAH) and USDA, Animal and Plant Health Inspection Services (APHIS) are conducting an epidemiological investigation of the event and have increased surveillance in the area as a result of this detection. State officials have quarantined the affected premises and implemented movement controls. Turkeys from this premises will be depopulated through controlled marketing.

As part of the pre-slaughter testing and surveillance program for H5/H7 Avian Influenza, H5N2 low pathogenic avian influenza (LPAI) was detected in a commercial meat-type turkey flock about 60 miles southwest of the initial detection. Partial HA/NA sequencing determined the H5 and N2 to be a low pathogenic virus of North American wild bird lineage and consistent with the index premises infection. ? Full sequencing of the virus from the index premises showed all gene segments are consistent with North American wild bird lineage H5N2 low pathogenic avian influenza (LPAI) virus. ? The Minnesota Board of Animal Health (BAH) and USDA, Animal and Plant Health Inspection Services (APHIS) are conducting an epidemiological investigation of the events and have increased surveillance as a result of these detections. State officials have quarantined the affected premises and implemented movement controls. Turkeys from both premises will be depopulated through controlled marketing.
