NEWBURYPORT — Local bird enthusiasts will soon be saying goodbye to one of the areas more famous birds as one of the two nesting peregrine falcons at the Gillis Bridge has contracted a terminal case of avian flu, according to Byfield bird expert Dave Taylor.

The peregrine falcons at the Gillis Bridge have long been an attraction for local birders. Local wildlife rehabilitator Dave Taylor provided background on the nesting pair.

“Every year the state bands the chicks. It’s kind of a big deal. All the birders go and watch. They bring the chicks down from the nest and put the bands on them, and then return them to the nest and ultimately they fledge,” Taylor said.

He said that he received a call at 9 a.m. Friday morning from Newburyport Animal Control that a bird, later identified as the female peregrine falcon of the nesting pair, was found near a mailbox. The bird was soon taken to Taylor for evaluation...
