When the rest of the 3,000 hens got sick and died as well, a vet and the USDA confirmed that it was bird flu.
"Which is a pretty devastating blow. Fortunately, Kakadoodle is more than just a chicken farm," Marty Thomas said. "We're an online farmers market so we deliver products from our farm and surrounding farms to people's homes."

The first known outbreak of bird flu at a farm in Illinois this year has been reported in the south suburbs. The owners told ABC7 it's been a whirlwind of a week dealing with the setback after 3,000 of their hens died.

MATTESON, Ill. (CBS) -- A family-run farm in Chicago's south suburbs was grappling Wednesday with what they said was a devastating case of bird flu.
Kakadoodle Farm in Matteson lost its entire flock of nearly 3,000 hens.
The saga at the farm began last week, when a handful of chickens started dying without any symptoms. The owners of the farm initially thought freezing temperatures were to blame, but they said it was later confirmed by the U.S. Department of Agriculture that the cause was indeed bird flu...
