The USDA Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS), in conjunction with State Animal Health and Wildlife Officials, are conducting comprehensive epidemiological investigations and enhanced surveillance in response to the HPAI H5N1 related events. Affected population counts are based on estimated inventories from the date the outbreak was first reported to the World Organisation for Animal Health. HPAI events are now closed and control areas have been released in the following States: Alabama, Alaska, Arkansas, Colorado, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Mississippi, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Utah, Virginia, Washington and Wisconsin. These States have not had any recent HPAI events and have demonstrated: • Required surveillance in the State and control areas has been completed with negative results for HPAI. As a precaution, additional enhanced surveillance may continue in the State and area. • Depopulation of infected premises has been completed and appropriate disposal was implemented or completed. • Cleaning and disinfection of the infected premises has been completed (including, but not limited to, outside areas of premises, equipment, trucks, and other fomites). Note (26/10/2022): After reassessment by field investigators, outbreak OB_107904 has been designated as non-poultry premises and subsequently removed from this event.

Two chickens tested positive for bird flu at San Francisco live bird market
      June 3, 2024

      snip

Health officials said Monday that the H5N1 avian flu was detected last month in two asymptomatic chickens at a live bird market in San Francisco, but there is no sign that the public has been exposed.

The bird flu virus was found as part of routine tests at live bird markets around the state by the California Department of Food and Agriculture.

Market employees who had been in close contact with the birds were monitored and didn't report any symptoms after a 10-day period, said San Francisco Director of Health Dr. Grant Colfax in a report that appears on Tuesday's health commission agenda.

No members of the public were exposed and the market has since reopened.

"At this time, there are no reported human cases of H5N1 and H5N1 remains a low risk to the general public," the department said in a statement on Monday.

After the virus was detected in chickens, WastewaterSCAN, a national collaborative that monitors infectious diseases in municipal wastewater systems, found fragments of H5N1 genetic material in the city's wastewater. Another test found no fragments, and the health department is investigating to learn more about interpreting the findings..

"It is possible that the H5N1 fragments detected in wastewater originated from birds or other animals due to San Francisco's unique combined sewer system that collects and treats both wastewater and stormwater in the same network of pipes," according to the report from the health department.

62,800 turkeys were in California flock hit by HPAI

            September 20, 2024
            Roy Graber

The first U.S. commercial poultry flock to be struck by highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) in two months involved 62,800 turkeys, the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) reported.

APHIS previously reported that the presence of HPAI was confirmed in a commercial meat turkey flock in Merced County, California, on September 18. However, the initial report did not state how many birds were affected. APHIS has since updated its website to include the flock size. ...

              Avian Influenza Updates

              Avian Influenza Alert

September 19, 2024: Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (Bird Flu) Detected in a California Commercial Turkey Flock in Merced County

Sacramento, CA – Following an investigation by the California Department of Food and Agriculture (CDFA), the U.S. Department of Agriculture's (USDA) National Veterinary Services Laboratories (NVSL) has confirmed highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) in a commercial turkey flock in Merced County. This is the first detection of HPAI in domestic poultry since California was declared HPAI-free on June 28th, 2024. All detections of HPAI in poultry can be found here: 2022–2024 Detections of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (usda.gov).

This HPAI virus spreads easily between birds and is lethal to poultry, so infected flocks are quarantined and euthanized, followed by cleaning and disinfection of the barns. The disease is spread through movement of infected or exposed birds, direct or indirect contact with infected wild and domestic birds, or contact with virus on fomites (surfaces) such as hands, shoes, clothing, or feet and the fur of rodents and other animals exposed to infected birds or cattle. The source of infection in this flock is currently unknown and under investigation. Testing of other farms in the area will be conducted over the next several weeks to determine the extent of spread. We strongly urge all poultry owners in California to protect their flocks by increasing their biosecurity practices. Recommended biosecurity practices can be found on the CDFA and USDA websites.

Clinical signs of HPAI include sudden death, trouble breathing, clear runny discharge (from nose, mouth, and eyes), lethargy, decreased food and water intake, swelling (eyes, head, wattles, or combs), discolored or bruised comb, wattles, or legs, stumbling/falling, or a twisted neck. For more information and updates, please visit our CDFA Avian Health Program webpage. Poultry owners with flocks that have experienced any unusual/suspicious illness or deaths should call our CDFA Sick Bird Hotline at 866-922-BIRD (2473).

Report any unusual or suspicious dead wild birds to the California Department of Fish and Wildlife online. If you have questions about wildlife rehabilitation, please contact the California Department of Fish and Wildlife directly: Wildlife Health Lab - Avian Investigations (ca.gov).

Bird flu disrupts 100 Tulare County dairies, hits first poultry farm as outbreak worsens

                    Updated 12:03 PT Oct. 23

Bird flu has spread to a poultry farm west of Springville, and continues to hit more Tulare County dairies and dairy workers.

A commercial broiler poultry farm just west of Springville, with a flock of 786,600 birds, has been confirmed to have cases of bird flu, according to the USDA Agriculture Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service.

Meanwhile, human cases of bird flu have increased to 13 in California, with nine cases in Tulare County, according to the Tulare County Health & Human Services Agency’s Oct. 22 update.

Infections have also been reported in Kings and Kern counties.
                    -snip-
“The county's health department is trying to make sure that those workers seek care through one specific medical provider to try to ensure continuity of care,” Stever Blattler said. “While that's probably appropriate from a human health doctor point of view, it's a little bit difficult because it means the dairy employer has to make sure that the employee goes to a certain location, even if that dairy employer has a different medical facility for their workers’ comp care.

“The dairy community is being responsive to trying to protect animal health and human health of their workers, to the best of their abilities,” said Blattler, but she noted that a lot of dairy producers “have voiced the frustration that trying to get enough equipment, and veterinarian support for their livestock has been difficult.”
