                  Re: FluTrackers Confirmed U.S. Deaths - June 27 +

Hawaii DOH is claiming H1N1 was not the primary cause of their death reported yesterday, but that it was a contributing factor. I don't know how you guys feel about it, but that seems like splitting hairs to me. Is it enough to say that anyone who has confirmed H1N1 and dies is an H1N1 death? regardless of the soft sell from DOH officials?

I agree with including this death. If H1N1 was a contributing factor, then the death should be on our list in my opinion.

I believe that one of these is Pennsylvania death #4 and the other one is new.

Two more Phila. deaths from swine flu confirmed

Two more Philadelphia residents have died of complications related to swine flu, officials with the city Department of Public Health said last night.
Both patients - a man and a woman - were described only as middle-aged adults with underlying medical conditions whose infections were confirmed posthumously late last week.

The deaths in Philadelphia, only one of which was included in yesterday's update by the state Department of Health, were the fourth and fifth in Pennsylvania attributed to influenza A(H1N1). and the third in Philadelphia.

Six people have died in New Jersey, all in the northern part of the state.

Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Delaware were among 12 states with widespread influenza, a measure of geographic spread that does not indicate severity or type of flu, for the week ending June 20, the latest surveillance report from the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

A CDC official estimated on Thursday that as many as one million Americans had been infected with swine flu, with rates as high as 6 percent in some urban populations.

Like those with seasonal flu, most patients with H1N1 have not been formally tested.

This was a new line that I began seeing in reports starting last week. My feeling this is just another line in the effort to dissociate H1N1 as a cause of death. I am fairly confident that the number of known deaths where H1N1 is much higher than what been reported as Dr. Nimin commented yesterday about the announcement in NY about 14 deaths that took place in May, and slips in announcements by WHO and CDC. How many other States and Countries are hiding numbers, I suspect all, just look at Argentina they quickly announced 28 deaths in a few days and now a week later only a few more, does any one believe the numbers leveled off as infection spreads.

Just as we gave up one getting exact case counts weeks ago, at some point we will have to give up on getting exact death counts. There's just no way we're going to be able to get an exact count. After the pandemic is over, we'll look back and be able to make an estimate, but there are just so many special circumstances that can occur in an individual that even if we knew the medical history of every H1N1 case (which is a hopeless goal), we still couldn't agree on which deaths to count.

More power to those of you who are still trying.

As posted here, half of all US deaths have had no announced underlying health conditions. Many of these have been "silently" announced, that is, they turned up in the case counts on some health department website or in a press conference, but there was no elaborate attempt to use these cases as an exposition of how benign swine flu is for healthy people. Many of those listed as having underlying conditions had conditions where the link to causing more severe influenza illness is tenuous at best, nevertheless I included them as having underlying conditions. Therefore, I think this percentage is actually much higher than 50%. It is becoming increasingly difficult to believe that there are not more deaths than being reported because it would be too "scary" to announce them, particularly when they are going to be healthy people.

alert I would agree with you that sooner or later we will have to give up counting deaths. My feeling is that our numbers are already inaccurate, and will only get further from reality as more fatalities occur. This list is only a rough sketch of the situation in the U.S., but maybe a rough sketch is better than simply remaining silent about it. The only analogy I can think of is this: walking in a pitch black tunnel, would you rather have a candle flame, or no light at all?

thebes yes, I think the report of 2 more deaths in Philadelphia today would be our Pennsylvania #4 and one new one.
