Modern Morals
Published:Aug 24, 2009
Q: I RECENTLY tested positive for the H1N1 virus. I told my partners that the results were negative and went to work. I had an important make-or-break meeting that I didn?t want to be excluded from. Two of my partners are now very sick but their doctors aren?t testing them due to a backlog of tests at pathology labs. I feel terrible. Should I tell them I lied about my results and that they probably caught the virus from me?
Their doctors have probably told them that they may have the virus even though they have not been tested. They may have been prescribed the necessary antiviral medication and they may have caught the virus from someone other than you. However, all of this does not excuse lying to them about your result. You made a mistake and you need to set the record straight. Hopefully, their admiration for your commitment to your work will outweigh their anger at the fact that you could have infected the staff and their families because you didn?t want to be left out.
