A video showing tanks lined up on a road in China has shocked the internet. Quoting local media outlets, users on Reddit say that the footage is from Rizhao, in Shandong Province and the tanks have been deployed to protect the local branch of a bank at the heart of a scandal. The issue first surfaced in April when South China Morning Post (SCMP), in an article, said that residents of Henan and Anhui provinces were denied access to the bank accounts due to a "system upgrade".

I am posting this article from last year because Bloomberg is reporting that current real estate bank protests are a new phenomena. Bank protests are not new.

Depositors' rights protests in Henan were beaten and suppressed, triggering public outrage

ZIXU WANG, Wang Shuangzhou July 12, 2022

    snip

When depositors started showing up to withdraw their money, authorities in Zhengzhou city tried to stop them from traveling, using a health code app designed to prevent the spread of the virus .

The authorities backed down after strong criticism, and several officials were punished. But the depositors kept pouring in, with as many as a thousand gathering on Sunday.
This time, the authorities sent a large number of guards to disperse the protesters. They beat protesters, kicked them to the ground and pushed buses - the harshest response yet to the bank depositors seeking compensation.

Photos and videos of plainclothes security officers attacking protesters circulated on Chinese social media, fueling outrage over the use of force. While protest photos are often swiftly censored in China, the video from Zhengzhou remained widely circulated on Monday, with a related hashtag viewed 32 million times on Weibo.

Protesters gather in front of the Zhengzhou branch of the People's Bank of China, China's central bank. Protesters interviewed by phone said dozens were taken to hospital after being beaten.
