New Covid Variant Xec Spreading Rapidly Across Continents
Wednesday 28 August 2024, 09:07 - Last updated: 17:53
A new Covid variant is spreading rapidly and has caught the attention of the research world: 111 samples have already been reported from 15 countries, across three different continents. A significant spread, which may have originated from Germany.
What the XEC! Recombinant #SARSCoV2 lineage #XEC (recombinant of KS.1.1/KP.3.3) has the potential to outcompete other circulating lineages in #USA (and other countries) More data is needed to provide a reliable growth advantage estimates

Recently-designated recombinant XEC now leads #Collection42 https://cov-spectrum.org/collections/42. XEC is still small, 26 on CoV-Spectrum and 37 on GISAID, but reported from 10 countries on 3 continents with the largest number of sequences from Germany. This one might or might not fade.
Spike mutational profile of KP.2 (Vaccine Antigen), KP.3.1.1 (Top circulating lineage - USA) & XEC(KS.1.1/KP.3.3) New booster antigen JN.1 (Novavax) or KP.2 (Pfizer/Moderna) are closely matched to top lineages in circulation compared to XBB.1.5 (last season's antigen)
Tracking #SARSCoV2 lineage XEC over time - #Asia First XEC (recombinant of KS.1.1/KP.3.3) reported from mainland #China - #Liaoning province Currently XDV.1 lineage is the top circulating lineage in China
Note: XDV.1 is a recombinant of XDE (GW.5.1/FL.13.4) and JN.1 XEC and XDV.1 share 61 Spike mutations Additional mutations in XEC Spike T22N, F59S, Q493E, V1104L
Mutations based on XEU:
C5534T(Orf1a:Q1757L), A5535T(Orf1a:Q1757L) / C27995Trev, C28291A(Orf9b:P3H), G28378T(Orf9b:R32L)
Breakpoint: 24193~27995
C5534T and A5535T are private.
Earliest sequence: 08-26 Republic of Korea EPI_ISL_19659060
Latest sequence: 03-13 Valdecilla, Santander, Cantabria, Spain EPI_ISL_19793483
Regions detected: Spain 15, Japan 6, France 3, Luxembourg 2, Germany 1, Korea 1, US 1
This could be driven by the NB.1.8.1 variant, which has been dominant in Hong Kong and China, and has been growing in countries across Asia including Australia.
