Authoritarianism advances as world battles the pandemic
    By JILL LAWLESStoday

LONDON (AP) — Here’s some of what happened while the world was distracted by the coronavirus: Hungary banned the public depiction of homosexuality. China shut Hong Kong’s last pro-democracy newspaper. Brazil’s government extolled dictatorship. And Belarus hijacked a passenger plane to arrest a journalist.

COVID-19 has absorbed the world’s energies and isolated countries from one another, which may have accelerated the creep of authoritarianism and extremism across the globe, some researchers and activists believe.

“COVID is a dictator’s dream opportunity,” said Theary Seng, a Cambodian-American human rights lawyer who has been indicted on charges including treason in the ostensibly democratic southeast Asian nation, where Prime Minister Hun Sen has been in power for more than three decades.

Human Rights Watch accuses Cambodia’s government of using the pandemic as cover to imprison political opponents without due process. Scores have been indicted and face mass trials.

When it comes to government opposition, “the fear of COVID, on its own and as a political weapon, has substantially restricted mobility for a gathering or movement to take shape,” Seng said...

And the arrival of authoritarianism can happen in places like France and the US. Thankfully there is pushback. But will it work?

France has protests and demonstrations against the Vaccine Passport (Passe Sanitaire), scheduled for every Saturday until the mandate is rescinded. There are hundreds of thousands marching all over France. Vaccinated and unvaccinated alike see the Vaccine Passport as a move towards tyranny and authoritarianism. Macron has made a unilateral decision as a dictator would to force the vaccine on the people of France including children, teens, and pregnant women. All employees who refuse to get vaccinated will be laid off without pay for two months then fired. It will be so ordered to all business owners.

Forty percent of the nurses say they will walk out mid September and in a couple of weeks the truckers nationwide will strike and set up blockades along all of the main roads all over France. Struggling businesses, namely bars and restaurants state it is "not their job" to police the people and will refuse to comply. Things are really expected to heat up here.

The vote on the constitutionality of the vaccine mandate is scheduled for August 5th and if it passes (which is expected), it will go into effect August 9th. That means France will create a divided country. Unvaccinated people will have vastly restricted freedom of movement and those with the passe who can go wherever they like. Unvaccinated will have to pay 50 Euro (not covered by insurance), for a PCR test every time they want to go into a venue that requires the Passe Sanitaire. This includes all doctor appointments, hospital visits, cultural activities etc.. However since vaccinated as well as non vaccinated people can spread CoVid, PCR tests may be required for everyone.

With the vaccines being so leaky, there is no good reason to be hassling health care workers. (And they should have a choice even with vaccines guaranteed to stop transmission.) My system's health care workers are being bullied, too. I missed a protest but will try to make another or write letters.

The Constitutional Committee passed the vote declaring the Passe Sanitaire constitutional.
Beginning August 9, the unvaccinated can only access essential services such as a grocery store and the emergency room without the passe.

Doctor appointments, pharmacies, banks, and post office require the passe.
Watch France erupt as 40% of the population have not been vaccinated.

Interesting side note: Fabius, head of the Constitutional Committee that ruled on the Passe, was implicated in the blood bank contamination scandal during the AIDS epidemic that took 1,000 lives. He was acquitted. https://www.francebleu.fr/infos/fait...ine-1549465155

The Experts Somehow Overlooked Authoritarians on the Left

Many psychologists wrongly assumed that coercive attitudes exist only among conservatives.

      By Sally Satel
      September 25, 2021

About the author: Sally Satel is a psychiatrist, a resident scholar at the American Enterprise Institute, and the co-author of Brainwashed: The Seductive Appeal of Mindless Neuroscience. She is a visiting professor at the Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons at Columbia University.

      ...
An ambitious new study on the subject by the Emory University researcher Thomas H. Costello and five colleagues should settle the question. It proposes a rigorous new measure of antidemocratic attitudes on the left. And, by drawing on a survey of 7,258 adults, Costello’s team firmly establishes that such attitudes exist on both sides of the American electorate. (One co-author on the paper, I should note, was Costello’s adviser, the late Scott Lilienfeld—with whom I wrote a 2013 book and numerous articles.) Intriguingly, the researchers found some common traits between left-wing and right-wing authoritarians, including a “preference for social uniformity, prejudice towards different others, willingness to wield group authority to coerce behavior, cognitive rigidity, aggression and punitiveness towards perceived enemies, outsized concern for hierarchy, and moral absolutism.”

      ...

As both left- and right-wing autocracies metastasize around the globe—a “pandemic of global authoritarianism” that has “persisted and deepened” over the past 15 years, in the words of the Stanford sociologist Larry Diamond—and as the speed of radicalization of recruits has hastened, the modest cadre of researchers interested in the subject will likely grow. By recasting left-wing authoritarianism in more specific terms—anti-hierarchical aggression, top-down censorship, and anti-conventionalism—Costello and his colleagues offer other researchers and the general public a new vocabulary for discussing antidemocratic attitudes on that side of the political spectrum...

The protest in Kazakhstan began as anti-vaccine mandate protests and turned violent after fuel prices were doubled, possibly as a way to punish protestors. The president gave the "shoot to kill" order on the demonstrators sending 164 people, including a 4 year old, to their graves. 8,000 have been arrested. Imagine.

Russia is no longer considering QR code vaccine restrictions. No sane leaders would want to foment unrest over something so asinine.

The new government digital I.D. is now being rolled out in Australia. And soon the E.U. will follow with an incoming European Digital Identity (EID).
Cristian Terhes, member of the E.U. Parliament explains.

                Trudeau’s totalitarian turn
The Canadian PM is desperate for his own 6 January moment
                15 February 2022, 11:00am

...On announcing the 'state of emergency', (state of emergency piled upon pre-existing state of emergency), Trudeau’s government immediately declared that banks are allowed to freeze personal and business accounts on the mere suspicion of involvement with the protest, without obtaining a court order. They cannot be sued for such actions. Police, intelligence agencies and banks are authorised to share 'relevant information'. Banks are now required to report financial relationships of persons involved in the protests to the Canadian Security Intelligence Service.

The Act also allows the government to force businesses (such as tow trucks) to provide services against their will, to ban public assembly and travel, to forbid the use of a specific property, and to secure specific areas. Its implementation was opposed by four provincial premiers...

...Yes, there were and are border blockades — but peaceful ones (the most significant blockade to date, at Ambassador Bridge between Ontario and Michigan, was resolved before Trudeau invoked the Emergencies Act). Peaceful civil disobedience is an established means of drawing attention to injustice when ordinary means of recourse have been exhausted. Theorists write of the need to reserve this method for cases of seriously entrenched injustice, where there is a reasonable chance that civil disobedience can attain the desired end.

However, Canada’s elites, both on left and right, sadly, are fixating on the presence of truckers in the capital and at the borders only as an embarrassment, a kind of excrescence on the face of the nation. For them, the problem is not one of citizen discontent but one of optics and economics. They aren’t interested in hearing about the impact of the mandates on citizens’ lives. They don’t want to carry out a public cost-benefit analysis or provide a clear exit plan from the Covid measures...

MTO grounds trucking businesses involved in ‘Freedom Convoy’ protests
                      by Today's Trucking Staff
                      February 23, 2022

The Ontario Ministry of Transportation has effectively shut down 39 trucking businesses in the wake of a crackdown on so-called Freedom Convoy protesters.

Responding to questions from trucknews.com, the ministry confirmed that 12 suspension and seizure orders were issued to Ontario-based large truck operators involved in the protests, suspending their operating authority throughout Canada, and issuing an order to seize all the plates registered to them.

Protesters from outside the province faced sanctions of their own.

Twenty-seven seizure orders were issued to large truck operators from outside the province, banning them from operating any commercial motor vehicle in Ontario.

The names of the sanctioned businesses, as well as the number of affected trucks, were not revealed...
