    CNN Exclusive: WHO panel to recommend 'deeper' study of early Covid-19 clues
    By Sandi Sidhu and Nick Paton Walsh, CNN
    Updated 7:02 AM ET, Sun February 21, 2021

    (CNN)The World Health Organization's preliminary report into the origins of the novel coronavirus will recommend more extensive contact tracing of the first known patient with Covid-19 in Wuhan, China, as well as the supply chain of nearly a dozen traders in the Huanan seafood market, which is thought to have played a role in the early spread of Covid-19 in late 2019, according to investigators familiar with the draft report.

    Independent scientists told CNN the rudimentary investigative work being recommended should have been done many months previously by Chinese scientists looking into the virus' origin. They said they found it "surprising" and "implausible" Chinese scientists had not already done that work.

    The panel's recommendations will pursue, among others, two key lines of inquiry, the investigators familiar with the draft report told CNN.

    First, they will request further work on the contact history of the December 8, 2019, patient in Wuhan, the first case confirmed by Chinese scientists and the WHO panel as having Covid-19. The patient has not been identified publicly, but is, according to the WHO investigators, an office worker in his forties with no exotic travel or contact history, who lived with his wife and child.

    Peter Daszak, a member of the 17-person WHO team and president of EcoHealth Alliance, which tracks viruses in animals, said the investigation had established the first known patient's parents had likely visited a market selling wildlife in Wuhan...

  • The National Security Advisors from the current and former US administrations were on Face the Nation discussing the lack of data from China on the origins of the pandemic. Pottinger discussed some animal experiments that were being done at the Wuhan Institute of Virology by the PLA since 2017. Dr. Gottlieb, (past FDA commissioner), is again the last interview. He restated that China was not sharing antibody tests from the Wuhan Virology Lab or the source strain data. He said it was most likely that the new coronavirus evolved from being passed back and forth between people and other animals, but he said WHO should not walk away so easily from the possibility it emerged in a lab. He said the new information Pottinger shared about China's military doing animal experiments in the Wuhan Virology lab did raise the risk of the virus having jumped from non-human animals to humans at the Institute.

        Pottinger said that U.S. intelligence sources have strong reason to believe that the "Chinese military was doing secret classified animal experiments in that same laboratory [Wuhan Institute of Virology]" as early as 2017.
        ...
        When asked if there was evidence that a COVID-like disease was already being transmitted in the fall of 2019, Pottinger said "There is."
        ...
        When asked why the U.S. health officials or U.S. intelligence did not know about the outbreak sooner, he said that the U.S. was too reliant on China's CDC. However, he said that the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) put the PLA in charge of handling the outbreak in Wuhan.

        The former security advisor claimed that China's CDC was left in the dark and that even the center's director "did not know this thing was circulating until the last day of December." He concluded that the Chinese CDC had been left out of the loop as the PLA tried to "cover this thing up, to try to contain it until it was too late."

        • Well...well...well...this issue is finally being acknowledged by main stream media. Once, everyone who alleged that it was possible that the current covid pandemic might be a lab escape were attacked online. I was told that I was risking the fine reputation that FluTrackers has by allowing the development of this thread on the site.

          I felt that I might ruin the reputation of this site by not allowing the discussion.

          China’s Reckless Labs Put the World at Risk

          Beijing is obsessed with viruses, but not biosafety. We are paying a high price for its lapses.

          By Mike Pompeo and Miles Yu
          Feb. 23, 2021 12:53 pm ET

          The Chinese Communist Party is obsessed with viruses. Its army of scientists claim to have discovered almost 2,000 new viruses in a little over a decade. It took the past 200 years for the rest of the world to discover that many. More troubling is the party’s negligence on biosafety. The costs and the risk to world health are enormous, as evidenced by a novel coronavirus that escaped Wuhan. This situation can’t continue. The world must hold the Chinese Communist Party accountable and punish Beijing if it fails to uphold global biosafety standards, including basic transparency requirements.

          The most recent example of this malfeasance is playing out around us. The evidence that the virus came from Wuhan is enormous, though largely circumstantial, and most signs point to the Wuhan Institute of Virology, or WIV, as the source of Covid-19. In America, concern about the site is now broad and bipartisan. The Biden administration stated that it has “deep concerns” about the World Health Organization’s investigation into the early days of the pandemic, particularly Beijing’s interference with the investigators’ work.

          The world has known for a long time that WIV poses a huge risk to global health. Two 2018 State Department cables warned of its biosafety problems. They even predicted that SARS-CoV-2’s ACE2 receptor, identified by WIV scientists, would enable human-to-human transmission. Yuan Zhiming, then director of WIV’s biosafety level 4 lab, warned, “The biosafety laboratory is a double-edge sword: It can be used for the benefit of humanity, but can also lead to a disaster.” He listed the shortfalls prevalent among China’s biology labs, including a lack of “operational technical support, professional instructions” and “feasible standards for the safety requirements of different protection zones and for the inoculation of microbiological animals and equipment.”

            Most of WIV's databases were once accessible online - but have since all been taken systematically taken offline by China.

            And it is believed one of the data files - which was password protected before being taken down - could be holding information on new viruses.

            Along with the password protected data, which was hidden to everyone outside of WIV, research by the team found at least 15 virus databases managed by the lab have been mysteriously taken offline.

              By Betsy McKay, Drew Hinshaw and Jeremy Page
              Updated March 5, 2021 6:55 am ET

              BEIJING—A World Health Organization team investigating the origins of Covid-19 is planning to scrap an interim report on its recent mission to China amid mounting tensions between Beijing and Washington over the investigation and an appeal from one international group of scientists for a new probe.

              The group of two dozen scientists is calling in an open letter on Thursday for a new international inquiry. They say the WHO team that last month completed a mission to Wuhan—the Chinese city where the first known cases were found—had insufficient access to adequately investigate possible sources of the new coronavirus, including whether it slipped from a laboratory.

              ...
              What a full investigation should look like

              Because the joint team investigation falls short of the mark, we believe it essential for the
              international community to outline how a full and unrestricted investigation could be organized.

              Such an investigation would need to:

              • Be carried out by a truly independent team with no unresolved conflicts of interest and no
              full or partial control by any specific agenda or country.
              • Be multidisciplinary by including epidemiologists, virologists, wildlife experts, public health
              specialists, forensic investigators, biosafety and biosecurity experts, etc.
              • Include several individuals with Chinese-language skills and with an understanding of
              Chinese culture, who can help to interpret behaviors during the original events and also
              help decode the dynamic during the investigation itself.
              • Start its study by considering all possible scenarios for each pathway. These should
              include:
              o A pure zoonosis event with/without intermediate host;
              o Infection at a sampling site of a lab employee or of some accompanying non-lab
              personnel;
              o Infection during transport of collected animals and/or samples;
              o Lab Acquired Infection (LAI) in one of the laboratories in Wuhan;
              o Lab-escape without LAI, for instance via waste handling or animals that escaped
              or were disposed of inappropriately.
              • Follow a common forensic investigation approach, based on:
              o Traditional rigorous on-the-ground investigation;
              o Desk-based analyst work to make sense of the elements collected;
              o Open-source intelligence to help gather additional information;
              o A review of previous zoonosis events and lab-related accidents, from which
              technical and institutional insights may be gained.
              • Have full or significant access to all sites, records, samples, and personnel of interest,
              including:
              o Key Wuhan markets;
              o All laboratories and institutions, Chinese or international, known to have worked
              on coronaviruses or shared facilities or equipment with groups that worked on
              coronaviruses;
              o Hospital records from fall 2019 of early or suspect patients, including interviews
              with patients or contacts;
              o Important pathogen sampling sites, such as the Mojiang mine;
              o Current and past personnel, such as employees of the labs in 2019 and people
              present on specific sampling sites.
              • Have full access to all relevant records of the labs and institutions involved in coronavirus
              research, including:
              o Environmental reports;
              o Inspection reports;
              o Maintenance logs;
              o Lab experiment logs;
              o Raw sequence reads;
              o Records of shipments of samples;
              o Specimen destruction records;
              o Personnel logs;
              o Incident reports;
              o Animal breeding records;
              o Sampling trip records, including the 2013 Mojiang sampling trip;
              o Key databases of pathogens, samples, and isolates, including those taken offline.
              • Have full access to granular data, preferably directly from the source and in its raw form,
              not summarized data. This data can be anonymized if necessary; there should be no legal
              reason to limit access.
              • Have full access to market samples, environmental samples, hospital samples and any
              potential samples such as waste waters and blood banks with full permission to perform
              independent sequencing or other testing.
              • Have full access to the Chinese CDC case records and related primary hospital and/or
              clinic records.
              • Have full access to other Chinese case databases describing pneumonia cases.
              • Be able to conduct confidential interviews, including of early cases and their relatives and
              past and present personnel associated with the sites or institutions of interest such as

National Health Commission clearly mandates that all detection, empirical data, results and conclusions related to this outbreak cannot be published on self-media or social media nor be disclosed to any media (including state media) or collaborative organizations (including any technical service companies).
                On January 21, 2020, a new drug, “Remdesivir”, provided for free by the U.S. to China for Wuhan coronavirus treatment, was patented by Wuhan Institute of Virology. Wuhan Institute of Virology filed a Chinese patent on January 21, 2020 (use of anti-2019 novel coronavirus).

He discusses the coronavirus outbreak in Wuhan, China and the Biosafety Level 4 laboratory (BSL-4) from which he believes the infectious disease escaped. He believes the virus is potentially lethal and an offensive biological warfare weapon or dual-use biowarfare weapons agent genetically modified with gain of function properties, which is why the Chinese government originally tried to cover it up and is now taking drastic measures to contain it. The Wuhan BSL-4 lab is also a specially designated World Health Organization (WHO) research lab and Dr. Boyle contends that the WHO knows full well what is occurring. Unsolved queries regarding novel coronavirus like- What is it ? A bat virus? Or a man-made virus produced through human greed mutation in bat virus ? or leaked to humanity due to greedy ignorance of people on safety and precautions ? or a result of bio-chemical weapon experiments ? etc remained a question till now. Answers still needs to be found and made clearto the public. As of now the world is more focussed on solving the cure as prevention time has already been skipped.
                This virus has a universal message for us and people on earth that we need to take a break from our greedy busy schedule and consider the reprobation and retroaction of ever-expanding scientific research and development. If we go too far with our desires and ambitions against the laws of nature, the nature will pull us even more far from the development.

                    Two signatories of the open letter interviewed by the South China Morning Post said their interest was not in promoting any one theory, but instead in pushing for full access to data and open assessment of hypotheses, including the possibilities that the virus had come from natural origins or that it could have been linked to a laboratory or research accident.

                    ?We should let the data guide us ultimately, and there?s currently a paucity of data,? said Nikolai Petrovsky, a vaccinologist with the College of Medicine and Public Health at Flinders University in Australia, who signed the letter.

                    ?What we have to do is stay in the middle, keep these questions open and collect data until eventually, hopefully we will get to a point where the data says one option is far more likely than the others.?

                    Petrovsky said he and other members of the group, which has been meeting informally online since January, felt there was a bias in the international scientific community against exploring if the emergence of the virus could be linked to a laboratory accident.

                      In a press briefing organised by the think tank Chatham House in London, Peter Daszak estimated that collective scientific research might be able to pin down how animals carrying Covid-19 infected the first people in Wuhan identified last December.

                      ?There was a conduit from Wuhan to the provinces in South China, where the closest relative viruses to (the coronavirus) are found in bats,? said Daszak, the president of the New York based group, EcoHealth Alliance.

                      He said the wildlife trade was the most likely explanation of how Covid-19 arrived in Wuhan, where the first human cases were detected.

                      That hypothesis, Daszak said, is ?the one that?s most strongly supported both on the WHO (and) the China side?. Daszak and his co-authors are set to release a report as early as next week, on the initial conclusions of their recent mission to Wuhan.

                      ?I am convinced we?re going to find out fairly soon within the next few years,? Daszak said regarding the outbreak?s origins. ?We can have real significant data on where this came from and how it emerged.?

                      Zoologist Peter Daszak thinks researchers will ‘fairly soon’ be able to pin down how animals carrying the disease infected people in Wuhan.
