'It plays to our worst fears': Coronavirus misinformation fuelled by social media
Experts say social media has increased the spread of misinformation during outbreaks
The alternative perspective is that social media accurately reflect the actual experience to date.
China putting 50 million people into quarantine is an enormous signal that the worst fears are entirely appropriate.
Separately, the experience of the three infected Beijing doctors, one of whom merely attended a meeting sitting beside his colleague who had returned from Wuhan, shows that H2H transmission is rapid and efficient, so extreme concern is warranted, just as the social media claim.

“Victims of deadly coronavirus could continue to pose a minor risk even after death, NHS staff have been warned. Public Health England have given doctors and nurses detailed advice on how to handle suspected cases with the virus, which has so far killed at least 56 people.”
There have been stories circulating about the bodies of the dead not being picked up at the hospital or homes. Also, I've not seen any stories/photos of funerals and I've only seen references to families being pressured to cremate their loved ones.
It takes ongoing effort by expert technicians to keep the electrical and water systems functioning. Many of those may now be unavailable.
Given the Wuhan situation, with 5 million people fewer than before the outbreak, according to the mayor, one would expect service disruptions, possibly increasing with time.
On top of that, many people in China are still poor and live hand to mouth, so they are abruptly made entirely destitute when the system balks, with no income, no heat and no food.
This risks becoming nightmarish, because even imposing martial law will not help when the soldiers themselves are equally likely to become victims.
Yicai News article estimates traffic outflows from Wuhan (domestic & int'l) before coronavirus lockdown with Baidu migration map & Flight Steward app data. Int'l destinations with top fight volume (12/30-1/22): Bangkok, Singapore, Tokyo:
If you scroll to the next tweet down, there is a graph, reportedly from the Wuhan government, showing deaths versus “cured” cases. Deaths are nearly double the cured cases. This is alarming and suggests a high CFR with severe cases. Of course the data do not include mild cases, making it biased toward more serious cases.
