  • Discussion: Stockpiled Medical Preps

Hello all. I just wanted to get some input on what would be a good amount of medical preps for an "average" household (2 parents 1.5 children) for approximately 12 weeks (for starters). I know this list can get big and extreme really quickly...the idea is to start with basics and end up with a list that others can use...and then perhaps we can all expand on it after we've got something to work with?

I know we should have on hand:
    Peroxide
    Alcohol
    Iodine?
    Asprin
    Tylenol
    NyQuil (or Generic)
Teas (Shannon...can you please give some advice on herbal items we should have?)

But how much is the question...and what other supplies?

    bandaids and bandaging supplies
consider common medical conditions of family members, and possible needs based on those (ie those with sinus problems, stomach trouble etc) that use OTC meds when the problem worsens.

if you take prescription meds, see if theres any OTC replacement and know what it is and how to use it and get enough if supply lines take down the pharmacies

have enough meds to treat symptoms based on how long you'd use them. Say to treat flu, youd want two tabs tylenol every four hours for an adult. Thats 12 tabs a day for one person. (6 times a day x 2) If youre treating fever and aches for up to a week- that's 12/day x 7 days- 84 tabs would be the likely largest amount one adult would use, so I'd tell soemone to have at least a bottle of 100 for each adult family member.

do the same with each med you stock. If the neede arises, you'll often use much more of them or of medical supplies than you might think, so figure it out in advance. Stock at least twice that if you can afford to, is my own feeling- its safer to have too much than too little. Good barter or sharing item too.

i had two boxes of bandaids in my preps, recently tried to cut off the tip of my left index finger. stuck it back togther, band-aided it up- changing it as it got wet or dirty. in 10 days, i went through most of a tube of antibiotic cream a bottle of peroxide and both boxes of bandaids. thats one finger wound! i now keep a lot more bandaids.....

oh, i only buy small cheap bottles of peroxide, not the large economy size. once you open it, it loses strength pretty quickly, so its not good value to use a large one.
