Discussion: Cruise ship hantavirus situation - May 2026
Travel vlogger Jake Rosmarin is on the M/V Hondius which has had 2 confirmed hantavirus cases, including 1 that died. Total suspected cases at this time = 7, per WHO.
jakerosmarin on May 4, 2026: "I also want to acknowledge that Oceanwide Expeditions and the entire crew onboard have been handling this situation to the best of their ability, and I’m very grateful for their efforts throughout.
It’s not easy for me to talk about this, but I am doing well. ❤️".
Passengers on cruise ship with deadly hantavirus will need to isolate for several weeks

Massey University professor David Hayman told Morning Report given the possibility of human to human transmission, passengers would likely need to be isolated for close to two months.
...
"It's going to make it quite difficult to manage as the World Health Orginisation (WHO) recommends people should isolate for 45 days because there is a long incubation period... I feel for the passengers on the ship for this long period not knowing what is going to happen."

How a deadly hantavirus outbreak unfolded on a cruise ship for weeks before it was identified

What the plan is for the people still on board
Oceanwide Expeditions said Tuesday that aircraft were flying to Cape Verde to evacuate two people needing urgent medical care and one passenger who was traveling with the German woman who died Saturday. They were to be taken to the Netherlands, but a timeline for arrival wasn’t clear.
The ship then would sail to Spain’s Canary Islands, a voyage of about three days, the company said.
Spanish officials had said they were monitoring and hadn’t confirmed any plans as of Tuesday evening.
Passengers and crew have been isolated in cabins with “maximal physical distancing,” WHO said, in a lockdown reminiscent of the COVID-19 pandemic.
A deadly outbreak of the rare hantavirus unfolded over the course of weeks on a cruise ship that sailed from Argentina toward Antarctica and then across the Atlantic Ocean.

Cruise ship with hantavirus outbreak to sail to Canary Islands
30 minutes ago
Excerpt:
Two crew members, including the ship's doctor, require urgent medical care and are waiting to be medically evacuated. A third person linked to a German national who died is also due to be evacuated.
In its statement, the health ministry said the doctor, who is in serious condition, will be evacuated to the Canary Islands today on a hospital aircraft.
It said the World Health Organization (WHO) had explained that Cape Verde "cannot carry out this operation".
The Zürich patient was probably on the april 25 flight to Johannesburg with the woman that died later. His/her onward flight needs to be contact traced as well. In addition, 2 people with mild symptoms visited St. Helena, which is why some people there are self-isolating

April 1st - depart on cruise and sadly the first death was on April 11th. Perhaps the Dutch couple were infected onshore? This more aligns with the 9 - 40 days incubation period found in this previous study. https://www.nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/NEJMoa2009040
"The only security we have is our ability to adapt."
The dutch woman was actually shortly in a KLM plane in Johannesburg to go to the Netherlands (I assume) but was refused by the crew. She died shortly thereafter. KLM is informing passengers on that plane
