    Below are links to websites of reputable organizations for additional information about exposure and reactions to disasters, terrorism, and other potentially traumatic life events. A wide range of resources are available via these links.


    Organizations of Interest

    American Psychological Association - The American Psychological Association web site includes helpful fact sheets for the public about reactions to disaster or other traumatic events, information about how children may respond, and guidelines about seeking mental health treatment if needed.


    Association for Behavioral and Cognitive Therapies - The Association for Behavioral and Cognitive Therapies web site contains general mental health information as well as information specific to trauma and disaster related mental health.


    Institute for Strategic Threat Analysis and Response (ISTAR) - ISTAR is a multidisciplinary center at the University of Pennsylvania devoted to research in the area of threat detection and response to natural and man-made disaster.


    International Society for Traumatic Stress Studies - This site provides a brief definition of Psychological First Aid or basic approaches to provide support or comfort to those affected by disaster. Content is also provided that includes a review of the efficacy of psychological debriefing. Links are provided to other educational materials.


    National Center for Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder - The National Center for Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder website contains a wealth of information for mental health professionals and for the general public about possible mental health reactions following disasters, risk and protective factors, and strategies that may help in the early aftermath and at later points in time for those who continue to have difficulty coping. Included are fact sheets for professionals and for those directly affected by disaster. A link is provided for a manual describing Psychological First Aid. This manual would be helpful to professionals to see clear guidelines for approaches to providing early support post-disaster.


    National Institute of Mental Health - The National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) is one of 27 components of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the Federal government's principal biomedical and behavioral research agency. Their website contains articles covering disaster-related mental health and specific diagnoses such as post-traumatic stress disorder.


    Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration - The SAMHSA website contains educational materials about mental health reactions and strategies for coping following disaster. Materials are designed for adults and first responders. Information for parents about reactions of children is also included.


    The University of South Dakota Disaster Mental Health Institute - The Disaster Mental Health Institute website includes educational handouts related to coping with grief and with witnessing disaster. The web site also describes its specialized training program in disaster mental health designed for graduate students and professionals.

    Emergency Preparedness

    American Red Cross - The American Red Cross is an agency that provides disaster relief and assistance. Included is information about impact of recent disasters and services provided in the U.S. and in other countries by the Red Cross. Information targeting prevention includes content related to risks of house fires and weather related accidents.


    Centers for Disease Control and Prevention - Provided as a public service by CDC, a federal government agency, several web pages are included that address education about different types of disasters including bioterrorism, chemical emergencies, radiation, and natural disasters. Recommendations are also included for professionals such as physicians and emergency response workers about assessing and treating injuries. Recommendations for agencies and public citizens are also included that are designed to prevent and optimally address negative health effects of disasters.


    Federal Emergency Management Agency - FEMA is a government agency mandated to oversee disaster preparation and response. This website includes information about government programs to assist those in disaster affected areas and includes content designed to help the public prepare for disasters before they occur. For example, information is provided about supplies, shelters, and development of personal safety and family safety plans in case of disaster. Training modules are also available for community and faith based organizations and for Emergency Managers to conduct pre-disaster programs designed to reduce negative impacts of disaster.


    Occupational Safety & Health Administration - OSHA sets standards for occupational safety and health. Web content provided includes information about protection of emergency responders (e.g. police, firefighters, health professionals) with regard to hazardous materials or other dangers that might be encountered after disaster. Links to information and government reports related to safety of emergency responders are included. Links to training courses and information about terrorism and workplace safety as well as courses for first responders are also included.


    U.S. Environmental Protection Agency - This government agency within the Office of Emergency Management (OEM) provides information on its web site about preparations and responses to prevent negative environmental impacts of disasters such as oil spills or chemical accidents.

    Funding Opportunities
    Community of Science Funding Opportunities: International, searchable database of funding opportunities for researchers.

    NIH Exploratory/Developmental Research Grant Award (R21): This grant is intended to encourage exploratory/developmental research projects by providing support for the early stages of their development.

    NIH Research Project Grant (R01): This grant will support a mid- to large-scale research project for 1-5 years. View annotated R01 grant application.

    NIH Small Grant Program (R03): This grant will support small research projects that can be carried out in a short period of time with limited resources.

    NIMH RAPID Grant Mechanism: This grant was established to quickly fund researchers following disaster events.

    Disaster News Network (DNN) - DNN is a non-profit news service funded by a number of disaster response organizations. Their website contains up-to-date information on the latest disaster events across the US and around the world.


    Trauma Information Pages - This website contains a wealth of information on trauma as it relates to mental health. Researchers, mental health practitioners, and the public may find the page helpful. The comprehensive disaster section is particularly relevant.
