Ecuador launches bird flu surveillance program due to presence of dead birds – Caretas
        November 12, 2023 by Admin

        Madrid, November 12 (Euronews) –

The Ecuadorian government has launched an avian influenza surveillance and monitoring program after reports of dead birds in the natural enclosure “El Morro” near the city of Guayaquil.

“In view of the recent alert issued by fishermen in the ‘El Morro’ paddock regarding the presence of dead birds, we inform you that we have immediately initiated protocols for the surveillance, surveillance and final disposal of wild animals, such as migratory birds and inhabitants of the habitat. the Ministry of Environment, Water and Ecological Transition reported in a statement...

...The first samples have been sent to laboratories at the University of San Juan Francisco in Quito and the National Institute of Public Health, where six cases of avian influenza have been confirmed...

          EPIDEMIOLOGICAL COMMENTS
In continental Ecuador in the coastal area (Guayas, El Oro, Santa Elena, Manabi) there have been four outbreaks of highly pathogenic avian influenza, which has affected the wild population of the following species: black-headed gull, camanay booby. Genotyping has been performed and it corresponds to H5N1 clade 2.3.4.4.4b. In the Galapagos Island Region, three outbreaks of highly pathogenic avian influenza were detected in the Galapagos National Park Directorate through notifications from naturalist guides of the fregatidae family and red-footed booby species. The samples were submitted for analysis and tested positive for H5N1 clade 2.3.4.4b. Specific emergency protocols for wildlife were immediately activated, establishing active surveillance within the affected islands and passive surveillance on other apparently unaffected islands. In the province of Manabi, there was evidence of massive mortality of wild birds (frigate birds) in mangrove swamps. Active surveillance was conducted in nearby wetlands due to the presence of ducks. In the province of Guayas, these occurrences were detected through passive surveillance carried out by the Ministry of Environment, Water and Ecological Transition along the entire coast of continental Ecuador, in addition to taking samples.
