I have a list in my mind as to what else i would need. Most of that list, besides the BIG last food run, are items i would not ordinarily buy and are on the more expensive side.
So today i bought a grate for cooking in my fireplace - $100
And a nice effecient solar battery recharger. - $250
Goju a word of advice re: your cooking grate. The pot will stay clean on the outside if you rub it down with soap prior to placing on the grate.
Also a cheaper alternative to your grate might be a cast iron dutch oven. There is a model that has a flat lid with an outside lip. It also has small legs. You can place a handful of coals on the lid and another handful under the pot and it will cook like a dream. You can bake, roast or boil foods in the dutch oven. The only downside is you must make sure you have adequate ventilation and access to charcoal.

Delta, have you seen the haybox cooking methods yet? Very good, easy and perhaps even more important, no cooking smells.
BTW, welcome to flutrackers!

Interesting, I was looking for a link and do not see one. Has anyone mentioned this kind of cooking here yet? Perhaps calling it by a different name? If not I will import the technique.

I also have a source for good solar cookers for $150 if you are interested.
Someone mentioned the solar panel. I would like to know what kind it is. Yesterday I was in a truck stop and saw frypans, small ovens and refrigerators, crockpots, broiler ovens, and even tv's that are 12 volt and have the ability to be plugged into a solar charger that takes that kind of connector/charger.
Someone also asked about dried eggs, etc. Salt Lake City is an amazing resource for emergency preparedness. A couple of sources are Kitchen Kneads, Blue Chip, Emergency Essentials, and Macey's grocery.
I have been doing and training for decades. Please let me know if I can help.
By Joe Radabaugh Issue #30 • November/December, 2004 Solar cooking is a delightful alternative to conventional cooking methods. The solar cookers available today really work and they deserve serious evaluation by a much larger audience. For 40 years, small groups of people have been using and refining some very good designs. But these designs have, […]
When I wanted to educate myself on prepping, I went right to the Mormon church's long term food storage guides. Great resource! Thanks for the links and your offer to help.

In thinking about staying clean with limited energy, water and other resources, I have silk liners for sleeping bags for everyone I intend to take care of whether they sleep in a bag or bed. Also a set of very thin liners, tops and bottoms, to wear under clothes. They only take a very small amount of water to clean and dry very quickly.
