    Influenza Weekly Update 2012/24
    11 ? 17 June 2012

The national influenza surveillance system in New Zealand is an essential public health component for assessing and implementing strategies to control influenza. This report summarises the data collected from sentinel general practice (GP) surveillance and nonsentinel surveillance for week 24 (11 ? 17 June 2012).

    Summary
Influenza-like illness (ILI) through sentinel surveillance was reported from 19 out of 20 District Health Boards (DHB) with a national consultation rate of 18.0 per 100 000 (66 ILI consultations). Two hundred and fifty-five swabs were received from sentinel (26) and nonsentinel (229) surveillance. Twenty-three viruses were identified: A(H3N2) (10), A(H1N1)pdm09 (6), B (Lineage not determined) (3), A (Not subtyped) (3) and B/Wisconsin/1/2010-like (1).

    INFLUENZA-LIKE ILLNESS SURVEILLANCE
In the past week, a total of 66 consultations for influenza-like illness were reported from 81 general practices in 19 out of 20 DHBs. This gives a weekly consultation rate of 18.0 per 100 000 patient population. Figure 1 shows the weekly national consultation rates for 2010, 2011 seasons, and 2012 to date. The current rate of influenza-like illness is below the baseline.

Five patients with influenza are in Christchurch Hospital's intensive care unit and another 80 in isolation wards, as pressure rises on an already fragile health system.

Hospital admissions for winter-related illnesses have surged dramatically over recent weeks and medical centres around the city are also reporting a sharp rise in the number of patients arriving with flu symptoms.

            ...

Christchurch Hospital has seen an influx of flu patients over the last fortnight and were treating 40 patients with confirmed influenza or symptoms. Five of those patients were in a critical condition on ventilators in the Intensive Care Unit.

Re: New Zealand Influenza Surveillance 2012

Canterbury influenza rates are soaring, with 52 people in isolation in Christchurch Hospital and five in intensive care.
This is well above the national average, with 67 people admitted to hospital in the region the past two weeks.
From July 1-8, most district health boards had fewer than 30 confirmed influenza cases. Canterbury had 155.

                    2012/29: 16 ? 22 July 2012

                    Summary
 ILI through sentinel surveillance was reported from 19 out of 20 District Health Boards
(DHB) with a national consultation rate of 108.5 per 100 000 (404 ILI consultations).
                     A total of 702 swabs were received from sentinel (96) and non-sentinel (606)
                    surveillance.
                     241 viruses were identified: A(H3N2) (155) including one A/Perth/16/2009 (H3N2)-like
                    virus, A (Not subtyped) (33), A(H1N1)pdm09 (31) including one A/California/7/2009
                    (H1N1)-like virus, B (Lineage not determined) (19), B/Wisconsin/1/2010-like viruses

Influenza activity continued to increase in week 29. Influenza A(H3N2) viruses remain the
predominant virus in many regions particularly in Canterbury DHB. These viruses do not
appear to demonstrate a major antigenic drift, nothing extraordinary.

                    INFLUENZA-LIKE ILLNESS SURVEILLANCE
In the past week, a total of 404 consultations for ILI were reported from 83 general practices

population. Figure 1 shows the weekly national consultation rates for 2010, 2011 seasons,
and 2012 to date. The ILI rate has increased slightly from 102.8 per 100 000 in week 28 to

                          Summary
? ILI through sentinel surveillance was reported from 19 out of 20 District Health Boards

                          ? A total of 513 swabs were received from sentinel (69) and non-sentinel (444)
                          surveillance.
                          ? 166 viruses were identified: A(H3N2) (87), A (Not subtyped) (49), B (Lineage not
                          determined) (17), and A(H1N1)pdm09 (13) including one A/California/7/2009 (H1N1)-
                          like virus.
In week 32, ILI consultations and the proportion of positive influenza samples have both
decreased. Influenza A(H3N2) viruses remain the predominant virus in many regions. These
viruses do not appear to demonstrate a major antigenic drift.

In the past week, a total of 421 consultations for ILI were reported from 83 general practices
in 19 out of 20 DHBs. This gives a weekly consultation rate of 109.2 per 100 000 patient
population, a decrease from 154.1 per 100 000 reported in week 31. Figure 1 shows the

                            INFLUENZA WEEKLY UPDATE
                            2012/33: 13 ? 19 August 2012

                            Summary
? ILI through sentinel surveillance was reported from 19 out of 20 District Health Boards
(DHB) with a national consultation rate of 85.5 per 100 000 (305 ILI consultations).
                            ? A total of 538 swabs were received from sentinel (49) and non-sentinel (489)
                            surveillance.
                            ? 196 viruses were identified: A(H3N2) (131) ) including 22 A/Perth/16/2009 (H3N2)-like
                            viruses, A (Not subtyped) (34), B (17) including one B/Brisbane/60/2008-like and one
                            B/Wisconsin/1/2010-like, and A(H1N1)pdm09 (14) including three A/California/7/2009
                            (H1N1)-like virus.
In week 33, ILI consultations have dropped and the proportion of positive influenza samples
has increased slightly. Influenza A(H3N2) viruses remain the predominant virus in many
regions. These viruses do not appear to demonstrate a major antigenic drift.
                            INFLUENZA-LIKE ILLNESS SURVEILLANCE
In the past week, a total of 305 consultations for ILI were reported from 80 general practices
in 19 out of 20 DHBs. This gives a weekly consultation rate of 85.5 per 100 000 patient
population, a decrease from 109.2 per 100 000 reported in week 32. Figure 1 shows the
weekly national consultation rates for 2007?2012 to date.
