  • NZ: Flu patients stretch ED

Palmerston North Hospital's emergency department is "overflowing" with flu patients, despite MidCentral being one of the only district health board areas in New Zealand to have experienced an increase in the number of vaccinations.

Despite national vaccination rates remaining static, 1520 more vaccinations were given in the MidCentral region this winter than in the same period in 2010.

The 2010 figure was also up on results for 2009.

In total, 34,010 doses of Fluvax and Fluarix had been given to people at the end of June this year.

Central Primary Health Organisation clinical board member and Palmerston North GP David Ayling said the increase in vaccine usage was pleasing, but there was still room for improvement.

He said despite the reported increase, there was still some resistance to vaccination in the region because of "myths".
