December 13, 2010, 7:22 Mexico, Dec 13 (Prensa Latina) The authorities of the Mexican state of Veracruz today confirmed an outbreak of Guillain-Barre syndrome, in diagnosing 30 cases, of whom two died.
The state secretary of Health, Pablo Anaya Rivera, said that patients are studied by specialists from the World Health Organization (WHO) laboratory analysis of the country, Atlanta, United States, the samples taken.
He said the dead had other illnesses that made them more susceptible to disease, while the rest, some of which are recovered in their homes and others are treated in hospitals of the Instituto Mexicano del Seguro Social de Orizaba Veracruz towns and Rio Blanco.
"There is no evidence to assess the causes of the syndrome, although low temperatures are supposed to respiratory ailments and no reaction after vaccination," the official said, adding that those affected are children from four months to adult over 70 years.
Guillain Barre Syndrome presents itself as a flaccid paralysis that begins on the extremities, with affection of the spinal cord, because it is the effect of the loss of the myelin covering of nerve centers.
Experts do not know what the exact cause of the disease and is believed to be caused by cells and antibodies that normally attack the peripheral nerves and spinal cord, say Spanish researchers.
In half the cases, the first symptoms appear as respiratory or gastrointestinal viral infection, but also reported infections and surgeries as propagators, says the Group of Guillain Barre Syndrome Support, based in Spain.
The institution Iberian states that another risk for developing the disease after receiving an immunization, and draws attention to rare cases occurred after vaccination against rabies and swine flu.
