Monkeypox in Puerto Vallarta: first case of the disease

    Jun 8, 2022

    Mexicanist

Monkeypox: Jalisco reports the first case of the disease, the subject was in Puerto Vallarta. It is a citizen of the United States, who upon learning he was sick, fled; those who were at Mantamar Beach Club will be watched.

The Ministry of Health of Jalisco (SSJ) reported the first case of monkeypox in the State, a man who managed to escape and who was in Puerto Vallarta over the weekend, so they called to be vigilant to those who were at Mantamar Beach Club.

The affected is a 48-year-old man, originally from and resident of Dallas, Texas, who visited Puerto Vallarta for tourist purposes accompanied by his partner. The man started showing symptoms on May 30: cough, chills, muscle pain, and pustule-like lesions on his face, neck, and trunk.

On June 3, he contacted a physician in Texas to report his condition, who recommended he seek medical attention and made a suspicious case report to the CDC and the CDC to the CNEI in Mexico. As relevant background, the person traveled to Berlin, Germany, from May 12th to 16th; he returned to Dallas on May 16th, and on May 27th he arrived in Puerto Vallarta on vacation.
The man managed to flee when he was suspected of having the disease.

The man went to a private hospital in Puerto Vallarta, and upon suspicion of this disease, he was told to take samples and isolation, which he refused and escaped from the unit. After being notified by the SSJ, on June 4 the case was followed up by personnel from the Sanitary Region VIII Puerto Vallarta, without being able to locate the affected person by any means of communication.

According to information from the place where the couple was staying, it was reported that they were seen leaving with suitcases on June 4; however, given that the patient was scheduled to fly from Puerto Vallarta to Dallas on June 6, the International Health area of Puerto Vallarta informed the National Migration Institute and the Airlines of the patient's situation so that he would not be allowed to enter or board the aircraft, as well as immediately notifying International Health.

On June 6, the CDC notified the CNEI that the patient traveled to the USA on June 4 without specifying the airline, flight, or schedule. On June 7, notification was received by the CNEI reporting the positive PCR test for Orthopoxvirus DNA (not variola virus), and only awaiting confirmation by CDC laboratories.

The individual had been to several parties

It was also reported that the patient, during his stay in Puerto Vallarta, was present at several parties, some of them held at a hotel in the port. Due to the above, epidemiological surveillance was reinforced in the health units, search for risk contacts, and recommendations to the population.

Puerto Vallarta launches a protocol to prevent smallpox. Jalisco is in second place nationally with 69 confirmed cases. The LGBT+ community is alerted.

Health officials in Mexico confirmed Saturday the country’s first known case of monkeypox, in a 50-year-old US resident being treated in Mexico City.

The man, a permanent resident of New York City, “was probably infected in the Netherlands,” Hugo Lopez-Gatell, an undersecretary of health, said on Twitter.

“Fortunately, he is stable and in preventive isolation,” Lopez-Gatell said. “We hope he will recover without complications.”

He provided no information on the patient’s possible contacts with other people...
