Just having time to share this...
Excellent 1 hr conference call (from 05/02/06) on communication in response to H5N1, but really good info for all kinds of risk communication.
Anyone giving a presentation should keep the audience in mind and keep it as simple as necessary for that audience.
Barbara Reynolds answers questions likeAfter hearing the conference call, I found this page that has a phone number for whomever wants to listen (I'd be curious to know if that included the Q&A portion at the end that those involved in the conference heard):
http://www.bt.cdc.gov/coca/callinfo.asp
Dial-in #: 800-369-1619
Passcode: Risk Communication
**Download the powerpoint slide show**:

I did not have that ppt available while listening, and the slides help.
Barbara Reynolds is an excellent speaker.

Barbara Reynolds answers questions like
- what do people want to know when confronted with life-threatening risk?
- what do they feel inside?
- what are the communication failures that those in charge might make?
- what can they/you do to boost communication success?
- what's the cost to individuals at risk? to communities?
- how is communicating to individuals under stress is different than other communication?
- how do you/we communicate about risk in an emergency? given that all risks are not accepted equally (nice info here and it indicates the degree to which pandemic will be the extreme stressor)
- how we build trust
She sums it up with To be effective, public messages in a crisis must be
- Simple
- Timely
- Accurate
- Relevant
- Credible
- Consistent
