Bal'a is a major egg and poultry-producing village, exporting up to 5,000 cartons of eggs and hundreds of pounds of meat each day across the West Bank. The Palestinian Authority (PA) Ministry of Agriculture said the bird flu epidemic will likely wipe out the town's poultry stock. Bal'a poultry farmers estimate losses in the millions of shekels.

The situation is dire, Bal'a municipal council official Ahmad Mansur said: "Tension and anxiety are prevailing among the farmers. At least 40% of the town's economy is in chickens."

Mansur has urged the government to compensate the farmers before the town is bankrupted.

The avian flu outbreak came to light when a farmer noticed symptoms in some of his chicks and called officials in to test the birds. "The chicks were only 8 days old when we learned that they were in fact positive for the virus," Hanun said.

"We were [then] obliged to declare a state of emergency in Bal'a," he explained, "imposing a health quarantine on all of the area and taking preventive procedures so we don't see the spread of the virus to other areas."

No human cases of the aggressive flu have been reported, but PA officials said the area is being closely monitored. Municipal official Sa'eed Hanun said doctors are monitoring the clinics and distributing information on bird flu to families in the area. Treatment will be immediately available in the event human cases are discovered, he said.

Hanun said the farm land and chicken holding will be sterilized, "and the birds will be buried in a healthy and safe way."

A quarantine parameter of up to 3 kilometers from the epicenter of the infected farm will go in place, advisor to the minister of agriculture Dr. Makhamareh said. The quarantine will include towns in Nablus and Jenin districts.

Breakout of a bird flu epidemic in a West Bank town has raised fears of likely elimination of the town's complete poultry stock, costing chicken farmers millions of dollars in losses.

At least 750,000 chickens will be slaughtered and destroyed in the town of Bal'a, the Palestinian Authority's (PA) agriculture ministry announced.

Police have cordoned off the area to ensure birds diagnosed with bird flu were not transported out of the area.

The town, which exports 4,000-5,000 cartons of eggs and hundreds of pounds of meat per day to the West Bank, will have its poultry stock wiped out, a PA official said on Friday.

No human cases of the influenza virus have yet been reported, but officials emphasized they are closely monitoring the area to ensure proper containment mechanisms are enforced.

The possible source of the outbreak has not yet been identified.

A team of veterinary specialists is assisting local residents in dealing with the emergency.

At least 40% of the town's economy depends on chicken farming. The Palestinian economy has already been suffering heavily due to various Israeli-imposed blockades and limits on export and import of Palestinian products.

NETANYA, 17 May 2010 (IRIN) - Animal cases of avian flu in Bala village in the Tul Karem area of the West Bank, northeast of Tel Aviv, have been confirmed, and some 250,000 chickens culled, according to officials.

Bala is a major egg and poultry-producing area and part of its produce is smuggled into Israel due to higher prices there, according to Israeli Agriculture Ministry officials.

''We are always on the lookout for poultry and eggs smuggled into Israel from the Palestinian Authority [PA] but now we are tightening supervision at the PA-Israel crossings,? the spokesperson?s unit at the Israeli Health Ministry told IRIN.

Israeli veterinary services assisted the PA by transferring the drugs needed for the culling, said Shalom Simchon, Israel?s minister of agriculture, and he called on international organizations to compensate Palestinian farmers for their huge losses. PA forces surrounded Bala to prevent smuggling of poultry during the culling.

Cases of avian flu were also confirmed in Kibbutz Ein Gedi in Israel, on the Dead Sea shore, on 7 May in a zoo; all birds were culled and the Israeli Agriculture Ministry is closely monitoring the area. Under international law, Israel is obliged to cease exports of poultry and poultry products for one month following the discovery of avian flu. Animal avian flu cases have been discovered three times in Israel since 2006. In all cases birds were culled and no human casualties reported.

Israel to assist with WB bird flu outbreak

Washington - In response to last week's avian flu outbreak in a West Bank village chicken population, the Israeli Agricultural Ministry has sent veterinary reinforcements for the culling of the birds and echoed the Palestinian's call for international organizations to help absorb to cost of the outbreak to farmers in the affected village, UN news agency IRIN reported Monday.

The outbreak occurred in Bal' village near Tulkarem in the West Bank late last week. Bal'a exports up to 5,000 cartons of eggs and hundreds of pounds of meat each day, which is why Israel is on high alert, as well. An Israeli Healthy Ministry spokesman told IRIN, "We are always on the lookout for poultry and eggs smuggled into Israel from the Palestinian Authority [PA] but now we are tightening supervision at the PA-Israel crossings." IRIN said PA security forces surrounded the village during the culling to ensure no poultry was smuggled out for sale.

Reports on the outbreak last week said 750,000 will have to be culled, and today roughly 250,000 have already been put down.

Avian flu is not only restricted to the West Bank. May 7, Israel reported an outbreak in a zoo at Kibbutz Ein Gedi on the Dead Sea. International law obliges any country experiencing an avian flu outbreak to cease export of poultry and poultry products for one month.

No human cases have been reported in the Bal'a outbreak or in Israel.

Supreme National Committee to combat bird flu confirm the absence of the Palestinian territories of the disease

Nablus ? Ma'an ? The Tulkarem governorate in the northern West Bank was cleared of bird flu on Thursday, after the Palestinian Authority Agriculture Ministry received results conducted in Israeli medical laboratories, an official said.

Azzam Tbeleh, the ministry's under-secretary, said the Israeli Veterinary Services officially handed over the final results, clearing the Bal'a area in Tulkarem.

The official said that despite being given the all clear, the Palestinian Veterinary Services would endeavour to ensure that Tulkarem was free of avian flu.
