  • Bahrain: BIRD FLU PLAN

    MANAMA:

More money was earmarked by the Cabinet yesterday to fight any potential bird flu outbreak in Bahrain.

The Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Shaikh Khalifa bin Salman Al Khalifa, agreed an additional BD238,450.

This follows a request by the Municipalities and Agriculture Ministry to bolster H5N1 contingency plans.

The Cabinet also studied a Health Ministry report drafted by a committee in charge of implementing a national strategy to combat an outbreak. A Municipalities and Agriculture Ministry bird flu report also came under the spotlight.

Meanwhile, food importers were yesterday urged to build up sufficient stocks of poultry to avert monopoly, scarcity or rocketing prices.

The Industry and Commerce Ministry has called on Bahrain Chamber of Commerce and Industry to stock supplies of white meat as a precautionary measure.

"We share similar concerns in the aftermath of an H5N1 outbreak in neighbouring countries," said BCCI member and food, agriculture and drugs committee chairman Ibrahim Abd Ali Al Daissi.
