H7N9 hospitalizes two in China
Two of China's provinces?Guangdong and Hunan?reported new H7N9 infections today, both older people who are hospitalized. The patient from Guangdong is a 73-year-old man who listed in critical condition in a Shenzhen hospital, according to a provincial health department statement translated and posted by FluTrackers, an infectious disease news message board. Hunan province's latest case-patient is a 75-year-old woman who is hospitalized in Chenzhou, according to a health department statement translated by FluTrackers.
The two new cases bump the outbreak's overall total to 395 cases, according to a case listing compiled by FluTrackers. The unofficial number of deaths stands at 120. The new cases also lift the number of cases during the second wave of infections, which started in October and has been tapering off over the last few weeks, to 259, compared with 136 reported during the first wave last spring.
In other developments, the World Health Organization (WHO) yesterday reported further details on reports of two H7N9 cases it received from China on Mar 14. They include an 86-year-old man from Anhui province who got sick Mar 7 and is hospitalized in critical condition and a 57-year-old man from Guangdong province who became ill Mar 8 and is hospitalized in severe condition. No exposure to poultry or their environments were listed for either of the patients.

H5N1 outbreak in Cambodia, low-path H5N2 in Netherlands
Cambodia has had another outbreak of highly pathogenic H5N1 avian flu, the fourth in 2 months, and the Netherlands has confirmed low-pathogenic H5N2 avian flu on a poultry farm that led to the culling of more than 10,000 birds, according to separate reports posted by the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE).
In Cambodia, a small farm raising chickens, ducks, and geese for research at the Cambodia Agriculture Research and Development Institute in Phnom Penh had 83 birds killed by H5N1, and the remaining 117 in the flock were culled to contain the outbreak, according to a Mar 16 OIE report. The farm was disinfected.
Meanwhile, subclinical infection of H5N2 avian flu was detected at the Dutch farm, in Gelderland province, according to a Mar 14 OIE report. No disease or deaths were detected, but all 10,541 poultry on the farm were culled to prevent disease spread.
Officials have established a 1-kilometer protection zone around the farm that includes eight other farms, and they will file weekly follow-up reports. In late February low-pathogenic H5N1 was detected in nearby Flevoland province.
