Salmonellosis cluster sparks ground beef recall
A Michigan company is recalling its ground beef after Salmonella illnesses were reported in two states, according to a notice yesterday from the US Department of Agriculture's Food Safety Inspection Service (FSIS). Jouni Meats, Inc., based in Sterling Heights, Mich., recalled 500 pounds of ground beef that was produced in early December and distributed to a Macomb County restaurant and sold directly to consumers by the company. The recall was prompted by an investigation into a cluster of seven Salmonella Typhimurium illnesses in people who ate raw beef kibbeh at the restaurant. The patients got sick in early December, and the outbreak strains were identified in Michigan and Arizona.

Head cheese recalled over Salmonella after illnesses reported
In a second Salmonella outbreak, Stallings Head Cheese Co., Inc., based in Houston, recalled 4,700 pounds of hog head cheese that was produced in November and December and distributed to retail stores in Louisiana and southeastern Texas. According to an FSIS notice yesterday, the products have been linked to six Salmonella Uganda infections in Louisiana. Four of the sick patients confirmed eating the recalled product. Salmonella was found in four of nine retail samples of the head cheese, and tests are under way to determine if it matches the outbreak strain.
