                The Ministry of Health of Indonesia has announced one new confirmed case of human infection with avian influenza A(H5N1) virus.

                The case is a 29-year old female, mother of the 2 cases earlier reported from Bangli district, Bali Province. She developed symptoms on 10 October and died on 17 October.

                An epidemiological investigation conducted by the Ministry of Health and local health officers indicated that she lived in an area with poultry, and household and neighbourhood poultry had died prior to her children's illness.

                Laboratory tests have confirmed infection with avian influenza A(H5N1) virus.

                Of the 182 cases confirmed to date in Indonesia, 150 have been fatal.

                    On 15th November 2011, the Indonesian health authorities reported to WHO one new human case of A(H5N1) from Bangli district, Bali Province (cf. map 1).
                    • The case is:
                      • A 29 years-old woman
                      • With onset of symptoms on 15th October 2011
                      • She died on 17th October 2011
                      • This woman is the mother of the 2 died children reported previously in Bali (cf. eWEB n? 188)
                      • Contact with contaminated poultry has been documented.
                    • The last human A(H5N1) case in Indonesia was reported on 26th October 2011 (cf. eWEB n?188).
                    • This new human case brings the total number of reported cases to 182 including 150 deaths.

                    • The possibility of a limited inter-human transmission can not be formally excluded.
                    • This kind of inter-human transmission, linked to close contact within a family, has been already documented in several countries.
