Indonesian teenager tests positive for bird flu

By Lin Noueihed
JAKARTA (Reuters) - A 16-year-old Indonesian youth has tested positive for bird flu according to results from a local laboratory.

The youth, from Bekasi on the outskirts of Jakarta, is being treated at the designated bird flu centre at the city's Sulianti Saroso Hospital, said Runizar Ruesin, head of the bird flu information centre at Indonesia's health ministry.

Ruesin said the patient had been in contact with sick chickens, the usual mode of transmission of the disease that is endemic in poultry in nearly all the country's provinces.

"The symptoms are a high, white blood cell count, high body temperature and breathlessness. He's now using a ventilator to help him breathe," said Ruesin.

Nasal samples from the patient have been sent to the U.S. Centres for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta. Local tests are not considered definitive.

Human cases of bird flu have been rising steadily in Indonesia since its first known outbreak in poultry in late 2003.

Indonesia has recorded 42 confirmed deaths from bird flu, equalling Vietnam, although no one has died of the disease there this year.

Indonesia drew international attention in May when the virus killed as many as seven members of a single family in a north Sumatra village.

Last week, seven Indonesians from the same village in North Sumatra were tested for the virus, but preliminary tests cleared them of suspected bird flu.

Indonesia has been criticised for not doing enough to stamp out H5N1. The virus remains essentially an animal disease, but experts fear it could spark a pandemic if it mutates into a form that can pass easily among people.

The government has so far shied away from mass culling of poultry, citing lack of funds and impracticality in a country with millions of backyard fowl.

Health of bird flu victim, 16, deteriorating

A 16-year-old Indonesia boy has tested positive for bird flu and was in a deteriorating condition, health officials said today.

Additional tests were needed to confirm the results, but preliminary findings showed that the boy contracted the potentially fatal illness from sick chickens in the West Java district of Bekasi, east of the capital, Jakarta.

He was receiving treatment at Sulianto Saroso Hospital, said I Nyoman Kandun, a leading Health Ministry official.

Hospital Director Dr. Santoso Suroso said the patient?s ?condition is deteriorating and he is supported by a respirator?.

Indonesia has recorded 42 human deaths from the H5N1 strain of the virus since July 2005 and is tied with Vietnam as the world?s hardest-hit country.

The boy had been receiving treatment at a local hospital, but was moved to a national hospital on Saturday, said Ningrum, an official with the ministry?s bird flu centre.

Blood samples would be sent to a World health Organisation-recognised laboratory in Atlanta, Georgia in the United States for secondary testing.

The bird flu situation in the vast archipelago grabbed world attention in May when seven members of a single family died of the virus ? the largest recorded cluster to date. The WHO concluded that limited human-to-human transmission likely occurred, but the virus did not spread beyond the blood family members.

Authorities fear the virus could mutate to become more easily passable between people and cause a worldwide pandemic.

Vietnam largely controlled the spread of the virus by launching a nationwide mass vaccination campaign in poultry last year. Thailand, which has reported 16 deaths, relies on strong village-based surveillance and mass slaughtering when outbreaks are discovered.

Indonesia records 43rd death from bird flu, most in the world

A 16-year-old boy in Indonesia died Monday from bird flu according to local test results that, if confirmed, would push the country's death toll from the disease to the highest in the world.

JAKARTA, Indonesia — A 16-year-old boy in Indonesia died Monday from bird flu according to local test results that, if confirmed, would push the country's death toll from the disease to the highest in the world.

Normally reliable tests performed at a local laboratory showed the boy had the H5N1 virus, said Dr. Santoso Suroso, the director of the capital's infectious diseases hospital. Health officials said he had come into contact with sick chickens at his home, just east of Jakarta.

Neighboring Vietnam is the second hardest hit at 42, but it has not recorded any deaths in 2006.

The teenager's mother said her son, Megi Supatra, was initially diagnosed with a regular virus and told to go home. It was only four days after his symptoms appeared that bird flu was suspected, and by then it was too late, said Sadiah, wiping back tears after her son's funeral early Tuesday.

"I knew about bird flu from the TV and radio, but when my son got sick I had no clue it was bird flu,'' she said. "I had no idea he was going to leave me.''

Grieving relatives buried Megi at a family plot shaded by jackfruit trees close to his home in Bekasi. Yards away, villagers were rearing chickens in coops.

The H5N1 virus has killed at least 135 people worldwide since it began ravaging Asian poultry stocks in late 2003, according to WHO. That figure does not include Monday's death in Indonesia.

New Indon bird flu deaths confirmed

From correspondents in Jakarta

INDONESIA said today that two teenagers had been confirmed as its 43rd and 44th bird flu deaths, making the country the world's hardest hit by human fatalities from the deadly virus.

?Samples from both of them have been confirmed as positive by both a health ministry laboratory and by the US NAMRU (Naval Medical Research Unit) laboratory,? Runizar Ruzin, from the health ministry's bird flu centre, said.

A 16-year-old boy died last night and a 16-year-old girl died today, Rizin said.

Indonesia's health ministry changed its method for confirming a bird flu death to the World Health Organisation (WHO) last week.

Previously, samples were considered positive if tested at a WHO-affiliated laboratory, usually in Hong Kong, but if two national laboratories confirm H5N1, it is now reported to the UN's health agency as a death.

The US lab is affiliated to the US Centres for Disease Control in Atlanta.
Indonesia, the world's fourth most populous nation, has been accused of acting too slowly to curb the spread of H5N1 and criticised for failing to conduct mass slaughters of sick birds, as recommended by the United Nations.

The government, arguing it is faced with financial constraints, has so far opted to vaccinate poultry instead.

Indonesia bird flu toll 'hits 44'
Two Indonesian teenagers have died of the bird flu virus, bringing the country's number of human fatalities to 44, Indonesian health officials say.
The test results, if confirmed, would give Indonesia the world's highest human toll from the virus.
Local tests showed a 16-year-old boy died of the disease on Monday night and tests were also positive for a girl who died on Tuesday, officials said.
Indonesia has registered more bird flu deaths this year than any other nation.
Vietnam has also been badly affected, suffering 42 deaths, but the outbreak there seems to be under control.
No one has died from the disease in Vietnam since the beginning of 2006.
Teenagers
Indonesia has recently changed the way it confirms human bird flu deaths with the World Health Organisation.

In the past, samples were tested at a WHO-affiliated laboratory before official confirmation was given.
But now, if two national laboratories confirm the presence of the virus, it is officially classified as a bird flu death and the WHO is informed.
The presence of H5N1 in the two most recent patients has currently been confirmed by one laboratory.

Officials said the 16-year-old girl was admitted to hospital on 4 August in Tangerang, west of Jakarta, but died before she could be transferred to the capital.
The teenage boy came from Bekasi on the outskirts of Jakarta.
He was admitted to the city's designated bird flu centre, Sulianti Suroso hospital, on Saturday, and his condition rapidly deteriorated.
Health officials said he had been in contact with sick chickens before he contracted the disease.
Criticised
Transmission from poultry is the main cause of human bird flu, but there is a fear that the virus could mutate to a form which could be easily passed from human to human, triggering a pandemic and potentially putting millions of lives at risk.
Indonesia's problems were highlighted in May when the country recorded a large cluster of deaths which the WHO believes were the result of human-to-human transmission.

But experts say this particular incident did not signal a major change in the spread of the disease. Indonesia has often been criticised for its reluctance to cull large numbers of fowl - a method that has proved effective in other nations.
But the disease is endemic in poultry across most of the country, and the government says it is simply not practical to initiate such a widespread cull.
It also says it does not have enough money to compensate farmers, and has asked for $900m (?495m) over the next three years to tackle the virus.
Globally, more than 130 people have died of bird flu since late 2003. Most of the deaths have been in East Asia, but the virus has also spread to Europe, Africa and South and Central Asia.
