The H1N1 influenza has claimed its first victim in Puducherry almost a year after the first positive case was reported in the union territory. The victim, a 33?year?old woman, died on Monday. On the same day, two patients from Tamil Nadu, admitted in a private hospital in Puducherry, also died of the flu.

"Three persons, including one from the Union territory, died of H1N1 on Monday," Puducherry?s director of health and family welfare, Dr Dilip Kumar Baliga told TOI.

The Puducherry resident who died was nine months pregnant. According to the health department, S Sujatha, wife of Sivaraman from Thengathittu, a coastal hamlet on the town?s outskirts was admitted to a private hospital after she complained of high fever and breathlessness five days ago.

The private hospital referred her to JIPMER on last Sunday. Suspecting H1N1 infection, doctors took her swab samples for testing and later referred her to another private hospital, as the ventilator facility was required for other patients who had consumed poison.

The test result on Monday showed that she was H1N1 positive. Her condition worsened and her foetus died on Monday morning. Her delivery was due on September 24. She was again referred to JIPMER but died while being taken to the institute.

Even though 10 people have died in Puducherry hospitals so far, this is the first death of a resident of the Union territory.

Two more patients from Tamil Nadu, who were undergoing treatment of H1N1 at a private hospital, died on Monday night. The deceased were identified as Rajalakshmi, 28, from Cuddalore and Kasthuri, 60, from Villupuram district.

Three more patients including one from Puducherry have tested positive for the H1N1 in JIPMER as on Tuesday evening, taking the total number of positive cases to 13. A four?year?old boy from Mettuplayam, a 29?year?old woman from Thirukovilyur and 27?year?old woman from Mortandi in Villupuram district have tested positive. Nine samples were tested on Monday and Tuesday of which 6 tested negative.
