Swine flu cases comes down in Mumbai

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Mumbai, Oct 9 (PTI) The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) today said it has witnessed a downfall in number of swine flu cases since October but the cases may go up again in November.

"Due to the October heat the swine flu cases have come down and even less number of people have come for screening.

It is a good sign but if the temperature goes down in November then the second wave of H1N1 will come again," Additional Municipal Commissioner Manisha Mhaiskar said.

Earlier on an average 8,000 people use to come every day for screening now the numbers have gone down by as much as around 300, Mhaiskar said.

The civic body said yesterday 326 persons came for screening of which 69 were given Tamiflu. In the month of October 7,212 persons came for screening and 54 were given Tamiflu.

      H1N1 patient flowdown to trickle
      TNN 11 October 2009, 05:32am IST

NAGPUR: The daily attendance of suspected swine flu patients in the special OPD at the Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) continued to
fall. On Saturday, this figure was just 30 at the GMCH and one at the Indira Gandhi Government Medical College (IGGMC). The number of admissions in the swine flu isolation ward too dipped.

On Saturday evening, the ward just had four patients. These include a H1N1 positive young man who is recovering but is under observation for about a week. The other three are suspected patients whose blood and swab samples will be sent to the National Institute of Virology (NIV), Pune on Sunday. The samples are not sent on Saturday as they are not tested at NIV on Sunday except in an emergency.

One patient each was admitted and discharged on Saturday keeping the number of patients in ward at four. Thirteen patients were given the Fluvir (swine flu medicine) as preventive measure on OPD basis. Meanwhile, work to convert Ward 25 into a special ward with all facilities under one roof, a big doctor and nursing station, and centralized oxygen supply is in full swing. "It is easy to monitor and keep a watch on all patients simultaneously in a big hall rather than separate rooms. Besides, the centralized oxygen supply and new electric supply will ensure better care and prevent breaks while changing oxygen cylinders," said GMCH dean Dr Deepti Dongaonkar.

I have not come across any, and believe me, I have been looking. From the numbers of confirmed cases and fatalities, it seems like the initial wave crested in mid September. Cases are down in Delhi, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Mumbai, Nagpur. Pune seems to be still fairly high, but not growing. Kerala, Puducherry and Tamil Nadu are reporting more cases, but still only in single digits. As the weather cools, authorities fear it will pick up again, but it seems to be a bit of a lull right now.

Number of H1N1 positive patients comes down from 60 to single digit in the last fortnight

Authorities ask people to be alert, as second phase of H1N1 virus turns active in US, Europe

HYDERABAD: The swine flu epidemic in the State capital and elsewhere is gradually getting contained going by the drop in number of cases and deaths reported for last few days.

This was stated by Government Chest Hospital Superintendent S.V. Prasad in an interactive session on H1N1 organised by the Federation of Andhra Pradesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry on Monday. The numbers of H1N1 positive patients have come down from 60 to single digit number in the last fortnight.

The fatalities due to H1N1 virus have also come down drastically, authorities informed.

                  Preventive measures

Authorities, however, requested public to be on alert, as the second phase of the H1N1 virus is becoming active in United States and Europe.

?We have to continue taking preventive measures because the H1N1 virus can become virulent in the coming winter in the State. So we have to be prepared for the worst,? Mr. Prasad said.

He suggested that the business community should come forward in containing the infection from spreading to others and ensure that timely treatment was given to the affected persons instead of depending on the government for help.

Mr. Prasad explained in detail the symptoms of the virus and its treatment along with precautionary measures to be taken. He later answered various questions raised by participants, especially students on swine flu during the interactive session.

Principal Secretary (Health) L.V. Subramanyam said 2.49 lakh persons were screened at Rajiv Gandhi International Airport at Shamshabad after the flu outbreak and 1,888 throat swabs were collected. Of them, 679 tested positive and 42 deaths were reported till now.

As travellers and marketing people were more vulnerable for the infection, the managements should provide at least one room for those having flu symptoms in the companies. He advised people to maintain personal hygiene to prevent its spread.

Heat brings down incidence of H1N
                          TNN 17 October 2009, 04:11am IST

MUMBAI: The October heat, which has been giving Mumbaikars a tough time, has helped in reducing the number of swine flu cases in the city. According
to the World Health Organisation (WHO) predictions, the incidence of swine flu has drastically reduced this month because of the heat wave.

In the first fortnight of October, only 3,793 patients were screened and 531 throat samples were sent for testing. Of these, only 20 people or a mere 3% tested positive. This is in sharp contrast to the 33% and 46% positivity rate recorded in August and September respectively.

"The positivity is increasingly going down. This is because the H1N1 virus thrives in cooler temperatures. Fortunately, the heat came to our rescue,'' said additional municipal commissioner Manisha Mhaiskar.

"The fact that we started administering Tamiflu to those with symptoms resulted in a dip in the number of swab throats in September,'' said Mhaiskar.

Meanwhile, the BMC is preparing for the second H1N1 wave, likely to hit the city in the winters. "We have trained 400 doctors. A 10-bedded ICU is ready at KEM and Nair hospitals. Another in Sion will also be ready soon,'' he said.

                          Malaria stings city

Intermittent rainfall, said civic executive health officer Dr Jairaj Thanekar, resulted in an increase in malaria cases. This year, 6,63,046 blood samples were collected as against last year's 5.5 lakh.
According to the World Health Organisation (WHO) predictions, the incidence of swine flu has drastically reduced this month because of the heat wave.

Swine flu: State urged to send team to study situation

Number of positive cases in the district on the rise
Three die so far in the district
                              Awareness campaign continues

VISAKHAPATNAM: The district administration has asked the State government to send a team of senior officials to the district to study the swine flu situation and give suggestions and support to control it, according to district Collector J. Syamala Rao.

Three so far died due to swine flu, two of them in the last few days, and more number of positive cases are being reported in the district in the recent past. Nineteen swine flu positive cases have been reported, including three deaths, while nine are being treated at the Government Hospital for Chest and Communicable Diseases here. Even as the number of swine flu cases is reportedly on decline in other parts of the State, including Hyderabad from which many positive cases and deaths have been reported, swine flu positive cases are on the rise in the district. Cases are also being reported form rural areas. If a team from the State government, including a Principal Secretary visited the district, it could understand the situation and give suggestions, Mr. Syamala Rao said at a press conference he addressed along with District Medical and Health Officer J. Sarojini, Joint Collector S. Satyanarayana and District Revenue Officer D.V. Reddy here on Monday.

Meanwhile the awareness campaign about swine flu symptoms and the need to approach a designated testing centre would be stepped up and the number of beds in the Chest Hospital had been doubled to 20.

                              Ten beds in KGH

King George Hospital has allotted 10 beds, the officials said.

On the awareness campaign, Mr. Syamala Rao and Dr. Sarojini said Medical Officers and ANMs of PHCs and Sub-Centres were told to continue the programme. The private hospitals and nursing homes were told to refer all swine flu cases to the chest hospital. Awareness camps were being conducted for the RMPs, to whom the rural people approach mostly.

Mr. Syamala Rao said that establishing a swine flu testing centre would be an expensive affair but treatment for suspected cases was started even before the result of the test was received from Hyderabad.

Dr. Sarojini said a patient from Arilova was being discharged on Monday and staff from here had gone to the area to explain to the locals that the patient?s presence would not cause them any problem. The staff would also check the area for swine flu cases.
