Residential school for SC/ST closed for 10 days
    Thiruvananthapuram | Saturday, Jun 26 2010 IST

Even as the Kerala government has taken all measures to check the outbreak of viral fever, including H1N1, in the state, a residential school for the Scheduled Tribes and Scheduled Castes in the city has been closed for ten days with the confirmation of three students effected with H1N1 infection.

The three girls students aged 11 and studying in sixth class at the Ayyankali Memoral Residential Sports School for ST and SC Vellayani in the district were tested positive for H1N1 infection, forcing the school authorities to shut down the school till July five as a precautionry measure.

Following the incident, 79 students, including 38 girls, were put under observation and started therapeutic course (five days) of Oseltamivir tablets in order to check the disease as advised by the Distict Medical Authorites, girls hostel warden Bindu told UNI.

Though the insitute had a total of 167 students, including 78 girls from across the state, 85 students were taken by their parents as informed by the school authorites in view of the viral fever, she said and added that the three students, two from Palakkad district and the other one from Kozhikode district were admitted at their respective district hospitals and their condition was said to be satisfactory.

Swine flu cases spurt in Kerala

Kerala recorded the highest number of swine flu cases last week at 266 followed by Maharashtra at 36, officials in the ministry of health said Monday.

With the monsoon approaching most parts of the country, authorities remained worried as rains accelerate the spread of the virus.

A total of 345 new cases and 17 deaths were reported from across the country last week.

According to officials, swine flu cases in Kerala are so far concentrated in two districts -- Thiruvananthapuram and Kollam.

The virus claimed seven lives in the state this week. Health ministry officials say swine flu vaccines and Tamiflu have been dispatched in sufficient quantities to Kerala.

The second largest number of infections were reported from Maharashtra which had 36 new cases of swine flu this week.

Seven deaths have been reported from Maharashtra while Andhra Pradesh has reported two. No deaths were reported from Karnataka, another badly-affected state.

No fresh case has been reported from Delhi this week.

            UDF walkout over fever outbreak

            Special Correspondent
Opposition takes objection to Sreemathy's trip when State reels under fever

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The business part of the Kerala Assembly's 24-day full budget session began here on Tuesday with an Opposition United Democratic Front (UDF) walkout alleging gross insensitivity on the part of the government in tackling the viral fever outbreak in the State.

The Opposition took particular objection to Health Minister P.K. Sreemathy's trip to the U.S. at a time when the State was ?reeling' under the fever outbreak. The Minister, the Opposition felt, should have shown greater propriety and postponed her foreign tour considering the ?grave' situation in the State.

The government, however, firmly rejected the Opposition charge and listed several measures taken by it to contain the spread of fever. Contrary to what was being claimed by the Opposition and the media, the number of fever cases had actually come down this year, it said.

Industries Minister Elamaram Karim, holding charge of health in the absence of Ms. Sreemathy, said that as against 18.55 lakh cases of viral fever reported in 2003, only 11.34 lakh cases had been reported so far this year. Against 3,546 dengue fever cases reported in 2003 with 68 deaths, only 1,156 cases with five deaths had been reported so far. In the case of leptospyrosis, as against 1,569 cases with 124 deaths reported in 2003, only 246 cases with 25 deaths had been reported so far.

In the case of chikungunya, against the 70,731 cases reported in 2006, only 272 cases had been reported till June 27. Out of 33,083 cases of H1N1 reported in the country, Kerala accounted for only 2,260 cases with 70 deaths till June 27.

            Visit defended

Mr. Karim said the Central team that had visited the State had expressed happiness about the steps taken by Kerala to contain the fever outbreak. The government had filled all posts of doctors in hospitals and health centres and they had enough stock of drugs for one month.

The Health Minister's visit to the U.S. was to hold talks with institutions there on setting up a stem cell treatment centre at the Malabar Cancer Centre and on developing the Institute of Diabetes here, he said.

Before leading his Opposition colleagues out of the House, Leader of the Opposition Oommen Chandy said the Opposition had nothing against any Minister travelling abroad, but only wanted to point to the inappropriateness of the Health Minister's trip at a time when the State was experiencing a fever pandemic.

This may be a report of three more fatalities from Kerala. The paragraph with the list of three individuals aged 65, 21 and 27 contains the words മരിച്ചു (die) and പനി (fever). If so added to the unidentified 70th fatality from the post directly above brings the Kerala total to 73, of which 36 were in May/June. Sorry I can't do a better job on the translation.

Re: Tracking deaths in Kerala (total 74)

Hard to say what's happening in Kerala right now as there has not been any reporting since the 1st. The consolidated status numbers for the past week were released today, but the confirmed cases are about 300 lower than reported in the post immediately above. There are also two other fatalities for June that have not been included yet.

For graphing purposes I have split this week's 222 confirmed cases 3 sevenths to June and 4 sevenths to July, but this may be revised if State figures become available again.

I'm embarrassed to say that I forgot last week's fatalities (edit and cases) in my data.
The total # of fatalities confirmed from Kerala is now 79, 5 of which are unidentified and probably occurred since July 1st when media reporting dried up.
The number of fatalities in this wave is now 42.

Less rush of patients at hospitals

                          Staff Reporter

KOCHI: Patients had a tough time reaching hospitals on Monday as hartal supporters stopped all vehicles.

The district General Hospital, which usually has over a 1,000 people at its out-patient department, had 167 patients, of which 14 were diagnosed with fever on Monday.

The hospital had only 30 per cent of doctors attending their duties and all operations scheduled for the day were cancelled.

No emergency cases came up in the day, said the Hospital superintendent.

In the Thripunithura Taluk Hospital, there were 177 patients in the OP, of which 15 patients had fever.

All the hospital staff had reported for duty as an ambulance was deployed to bring the staff into the hospital, said the Hospital superintendent. On any normal day, the OP varies from 500 to 600 patients.

In the Aluva Taluk Hospital, 84 people reached the OP. On a usual full day, the hospital has an OP of about 700 patients.

In a private hospital here where no doctors reported for duty, there were 70 people who came to take treatment, mainly reporting fever. The doctor on casualty duty handled the cases here.

The district Health authorities reported a total of 790 cases of fever in the district, of which 62 were admitted to IP.

There were 48 cases of diarrhoeal diseases reported of which five patients were admitted to hospital care.

                                Fever recedes in district

                                Staff Reporter

Thiruvananthapuram: Improved surveillance, strengthening of IEC (information, education, communication) activities and good interventions at the community level in the district seems to have paid off, with all viral fever cases, including H1N1 infection, beginning to show a declining trend, Health officials claimed.Though dengue cases are still being reported, there have not been any recent reports of clustering of cases, they said. The dengue figures in the district have crossed the 500 mark but the pattern is no different from last year when intermittent spells of torrential rains followed by hot and humid days spelt disaster for vector management strategies.

Though the sudden peaking of seasonal viral fever or flu and upper respiratory infection as soon as the rains begin is an annual phenomenon, this year the scene was dominated by H1N1 infection.

?The number of confirmed cases is only around 300. But the viral infection was so widespread that almost 95 to 98 per cent of the cases of mild fever and flu were considered as suspected H1N1 infection and the GoI guidelines were followed in treating them. The number of H1N1 casualties in the district stands at 13, including three ante-natal cases,? District Medical Officer N. Sridhar said. With the increased and totally unexpected burden of H1N1 mortality, the level of alertness in the community was heightened. Oseltamivir was provided at the primary health centre-level, so that there was no delay in treatment. Ante-natal cases with any symptoms of fever were put on chemo prophylaxis using Oseltamivir.

                                Health workers' role

?The local health workers were alert enough to detect and control local outbreaks of H1N1 before it got out of hand. The screening for H1N1 among ante-natal cases, utilising the services of Accredited Social Health Activists (ASHAs), was successful. It resulted in an immediate lowering of ante-natal mortality in the district due to H1N1,? a senior Health official said.

As all ante-natal cases in a locality would find an entry in the register of the local ASHA, these volunteers were asked to keep track of pregnant women who might have any symptoms of flu. ?ASHAs will spot the women and send the report to the local PHC and the women would be asked to report to the doctor immediately. Nearly 15,000 ante-natal women were screened. In the first round, we detected 484 cases and in the second, another 64 women with mild flu symptoms were spotted. All were started on Tamiflu immediately,? NRHM district programme manager Sunil Kumar said.
