India: Ahmedabad confirms pregnant woman's death, 40th in state

AHMEDABAD: Swine flu claimed the life of a 23-year-old pregnant woman from Udaipur. Till date 40 people have died because of swine flu in the state. Deepika Soni belonged to Brahmpol area in Nachighat chowk of Udaipur and was seven months pregnant. For the last one week she was admitted to the government-run Udaipur general hospital. As her condition deteriorated, doctors advised her family members to take her to Ahmedabad. She was brought to VS Hospital on Sunday with acute respiratory distress and septicaemia. Soni was directly put on ventilator at VS Hospital, but owning to low immunity levels, mostly because of her pregnancy, she succumbed to the disease.

Nearly 14 people who came in contact with Soni in the recent days are being administered Tamiflu. A senior health official of the hospital told TOI that four relatives attending to Soni were administered the tablets while the Rajasthan health officials were asked to take similar steps for rest of the relatives who had come in touch with Soni.

AHMEDABAD: Bhanu Pariya, 30, a resident of Lunapur village in Sirohi district of Rajasthan died at VS Hospital on Monday after testing positive for
swine flu. She had been brought to the hospital on Sunday.

"She started complaining of fever on November 5 and was admitted to the general hospital at Sirohi. After her condition worsened, she was brought to VS Hospital for better treatment. As soon as she was brought here, she was given Tamiflu and put on the ventilator as her condition deteriorated," said a health department official.

Authorities are seeing a growing number of cases from Rasthan that are being referred to Ahmedabad in the last few days. "It is putting a lot of people at risk because these H1N1 patients travel in public transport for at least four to six hours. Not just the patients, but their family members who become prone to the virus, never take the warnings given by doctors seriously. Also, there is no follow-up possible with these families," a doctor in VS Hospital said.

On Monday, after Pariya died, the family insisted on taking the dead body back to their village in Rajasthan. However, doctors stopped them until it was confirmed that she had died of swine flu. After the test results came, the cremation was performed in the city.

Three other persons also tested positive for swine flu on Monday, taking the total positive cases in Gujarat to 297. These included a 37-year-old man at Wockhardt hospital in Rajkot, a 22-year-old woman in SSG Hospital in Vadodara and a 60-year old woman at GG Civil Hospital in Jamnagar.
