Mumbai, Sep 9 (PTI) A total of 68 persons have died of swine flu so far in Maharashtra, a health official said today.

Till date, 6,22,779 people have been examined for swine flu, with 26,765 suspect patients being administered Tamiflu, Additional Chief Secretary, Public Health, Sharwaree Gokhale, said today.

Out of the 2,204 persons, who tested positive for the A (H1N1) influenza, 2,080 patients have been cured and discharged, she said.

245 persons, including 56 positive and 189 suspected cases are still being treated at various hospitals in the state, Gokhale said.

Mumbai, Sep 11 (PTI) A total of 77 people have, so far, died of swine flu in Maharashtra, Additional Chief Secretary, Public Health, Sharwaree Gokhale, told reporters today.

Till date, 6,49,647 people have been examined for H1N1 virus and 29,538 suspected patients have been administered Tamiflu.

The number of persons who have tested positive for the influenza and have been discharged from hospitals after treatment stands at 2,132, she said.

Altogether 250 persons, including 60 positive and 190 suspected cases, are still being treated at various hospitals in the state, Gokhale said.

Pune, Sep 12 : The dreaded swine flu has claimed two more lives in Maharashtra pushing the toll to 73, even as 12 fresh H1N1 positive cases were reported in the city today.



Forty-year-old Ankush Shivram Fale, hailing from Chikalgaon village of Mulshi taluka, succumbed at Deenanath Mangeshkar hospital to the H1N1 virus at 1230 hrs today, becoming the 41st swine flu victim of Pune.

A 35-year-old woman Fatima Momin, a resident of Bhiwandi in Mumbai, succumbed to the dreaded H1N1 virus in civic-run Nair Hospital, pushing the swine flu toll in the city to 17.

Pune District collector Chandrakant Dalvi, while addressing reporters here this evening, said that there has been increase in the number of deaths with last 48 hours but the situation is under control. He said, ''The patients at risk are the ones who already have the history of other ailments like heart disease and diabetis.

If there is delay in treating such patients they may fall prey to swine flu. Therefore we have appealed to the people and the students that even if the slighest symptoms occur, they should get themselves examined.'' The number of patients in Intensive Care Unit (ICU) has increased to 18, with five on ventilator.
Mr Dalvi informed that precaution was being taken in every school regarding the spread of the virus. Talking about the alleged negligence by the B K Birla Educational Centre near Talegaon from where many students were found positive, Mr Dalvi said, ''We are investigating the case and guilty will be punished.'' Around 7,627 people were screened today out of which 271 are found to be suspected. A total of 62 patients were admitted in various hospitals in the city. The 966 H1N1 positive patients have been reported in the city so far.

According to a government press release issued in Mumbai, 286 people are still undergoing treatment in the state in various hospitals, out of which 66 are affected and 220 are suspected patients.
So far 6,63,462 people were checked for swine flu and 23,03 patients were found to be affected by the dreaded disease. As many as 2,159 people were sent home after administering the treatment.

Pregnant woman dies of swine flu in Pune, toll 43

A 25-year-old woman, who was 18-week pregnant, and another 35-year-old woman died on Sunday at the Sassoon general hospital, taking the death toll due to H1N1 influenza to 43.

Dean of the Sassoon Hospital Dr Arun Jamkar said the pregnant woman -- Radha Narayan Prajapati -- was a resident of Padmavati. She breathed her last at the intensive care unit of the hospital at 1.45 am. Prajapati was admitted to the hospital on August 17.
She was suffering from high grade fever for 15 days before admission.

Doctors at the hospital said she was diagnosed with H1N1 along with bronchopneumonia and acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). The patient's throat swab had initially tested negative for H1N1. It was on August 22 when her second sample tested positive.

Jamkar said since the time of admission, she was critical and was on ventilator. On Sunday, 35 year old Pramila Kolte of Bhandgaon in Daund taluka died at 4.30 pm at the Sassoon hospital. She had tested positive for H1N1 and was critical since the time of admission. She was admitted on the night of September 10 and was kept on ventilator.

Kolte was initially taken to the Noble Hospital at Hadapsar, but doctors there immediately referred her to the Sassoon hospital. She was suffering from high grade fever, cough and breathlessness.

One more H1N1 death in Marathwada

AURANGABAD: The H1N1 flu toll in Marathwada increased to seven as one more death was reported from Latur on Tuesday.


With this the number of flu deaths in Latur division has reached five. Earlier, two deaths each were reported from Beed and Latur while one death each was reported from Aurangabad and Jalna (the Aurangabad division).

Assistant director of health services, Latur, B M Shetkar said that the 24-year-old youth Nagesh Swami, a resident of Chimegaon in Karnataka, had come to see his brother at Barshi, a few days back. He took ill and was admitted to a hospital in Barshi (Solapur district), neighbouring Latur. When Nagesh's condition deteriorated he was referred to the Latur civil hospital on Saturday.

But the youth died on way to the hospital. The civil hospital authorities here performed Nagesh's post-mortem. His throat swab sample was also sent to the National Institute of Virology (NIV), Pune. "We received the report on Monday confirming that Nagesh was H1N1 positive," Shetkar told TOI.

At present, 11 confirmed cases of H1N1 flu are being treated at different hospitals in the four districts Latur, Osmanabad, Beed and Nanded. Till date, total 40,840 people have been screened in the Latur division. Of them, 515 samples were sent to NIV and the authorities received reports in 461 cases. So far, 84 people were found H1N1 positive, including five fatal cases. Shetkar also said that 63 H1N1 patients have been discharged after full recovery.

Meanwhile, no fresh casualty was reported in Aurangabad division. According to B K Somani, the superintendent of the government medical college and hospital (GMCH), a 35-tear-old woman, Shraddha Nikam was admitted to the GMCH with swine flu-like symptoms who later died at the hospital of pneumonia. Her throat swab was sent to the NIV, Pune. But it turned out to be negative.
Somani said that presently two suspected H1N1 cases are being treated at the hospital. On Tuesday the GMCH screened 40 people and obtained four swabs for further examination. These suspected patients have been given tamiflu tablets. Till date, 259 swabs were sent for the NIV examination and we received reports in 230 cases. So far 23 cases were found positive, but many of them have already recovered, Somani added.

Total 35,255 people have been screened in Aurangahad division comprising Aurangabad, Jalna, Hingoli and Parbhani. 715 people were screened on Tuesday, said Prashant Deshpande, a senior official at the office of the deputy director of health services. He said no fresh death was reported from these districts and the condition of those admitted in the hospital was good.

Woman dies of swine flu in city, toll reaches 44

PUNE: The H1N1 flu claimed the life of a 30-year-old woman from Ghorpade here on Tuesday, pushing the death toll due to the infection in Pune to 44,
even as three educational institutions in the district reported positive cases.

Sharda Fulpati had developed Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS) and died at the ICU of the Sahyadri-Munot hospital at 9.45 am, said Ashok Mehta, joint director of health services.

The woman was admitted to the hospital on September 12 in a critical condition with symptoms of cough, fever and breathlessness. She tested positive for the H1N1 flu on Monday, he said, adding that the woman did not have any underlying medical condition.

Besides the three educational institutions, an army officer tested positive for the H1N1 flu, who has been quarantined at the Command Hospital, Mehta said. ?The students who tested positive for the contagion are from the Sant Tukaram Higher Secondary School at Chandannagar, JSPM Engineering College at Wagholi and the Indira College of Engineering and Management at Talegaon Dabhade. However, all these students are in a stable condition,? he said.

Nagpur, Sep 16 (PTI) Two suspected Swine flu deaths were reported today in the city, officials sources said.

They were identified as Archana Bhiwapure (23) from Hingana near here and Motilal Pachghare (42) from New Mankapur, they said.

Both of them who were admitted in Government Medical College Hospital were critical and breathed their last today.
The blood samples were sent to National Institute of Virology (NIV), Pune and report is awaited, Dean of the Government Medical College Hospital, Dr Dipti Dongaonkar said.

Soon after the news of death spread, relatives of the patients protested and police were summoned to control the situation, she added.

PUNE: Swine flu toll in the city rose to 46 with confirmation of two more deaths today.


Kashinath Ghanshetty (40) and Shankaramma Taylor (56 ), died at government hospital yesterday but their H1N1 test reports became available only today, health officials said.
With the toll due to the deadly virus mounting day by day, the district and civic authorities have launched a screening drive in the city and rural areas.

All schools were being covered in the screening with the help from various agencies, according to District Collector Chandrakant Dalvi, officials said.

The health authorities were also exploring the possibility of engaging reliable private laboratories for testing of throat swabs of the suspected patients as the designated National Institute of Virology (NIV) was flooded with a continuous flow of samples, they added.

Three more swine flu deaths in Pune (Maharashtra 94)


Pune, Sep 17 (PTI) The city today reported three more deaths due to swine flu taking the toll to 49.

The latest victims included two women and a 17-year-old boy who succumbed to the virus in different hospitals, Dr Ashok Mehta, joint director (health), told reporters.

The victims were identified as Priya Deshmukh (13), Gurumma Bachi (60) and Shashikant Bhalerao (17).
Meanwhile, two more schools today reported fresh H1N1 positive cases, he added.

Earlier in the day, health officials had reported two deaths of swine flu patients that of Kashinath Ghanshetty (40) and Shankaramma Taylor (56 ) which took the death toll to 46.

They died at government-run Sassoon hospital yesterday, officials said.

With the pandemic situation worsening day by day, the district and civic authorities have launched a massive screening drive in the city and rural areas.

NAGPUR: Even as swine flu statistics push Nagpur gradually up the national graph, comes the shocker that a batch of seven samples sent to the
Pune-based National Institute of Virology in Pune is missing. This includes the samples of the two who died on Wednesday evening at the Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH).
As is the practice, the samples were sent by courier on an Indigo flight on Tuesday. Medical sources in Nagpur and Pune confirmed that until Thursday evening the box has not been traced.

The mystery came to light when the GMCH dean Dr Deepti Dongaonkar called up the NIV to enquire about the reports of Moti Pajdhare and Archana Bhiwapure who died on Wednesday. For two days in a row now, the GMCH has not received any report from Pune. Quite often the NIV authorities inform the GMCH about positive cases over phone

Swine flu claims 101 lives in Maha

Mumbai, Sept 19 (PTI) A total of 101 persons have died of swine flu so far in Maharashtra, a health official said today.

Till date, 7,51,496 people*have been examined for the disease of which 34,186 suspected patients were administered Tamiflu, additional chief secretary (Public Health) Sharwaree Gokhale told reporters at the state secretariat.

Around 90 per cent of swine flu deaths in the state were due to Tamiflu treatment being administered late, she said.

As many as 2,670 persons have been tested positive for the H1N1 virus, of which 2,462 have been cured, she said.

Altogether 423 persons, including 107 positive and 316 suspected cases, are still being treated at various hospitals in the state, Gokhale said.

Two youths die, swine flu toll in city climbs to 56

Pune A 24-year-old man, Rupesh Sondkar from Kothrud, and 26-year-old Mahananda Khajappa Sonkamble from Ambegaon Budruk succumbed to swine flu here on Sunday.

With these deaths, Pune has recorded 56 swine flu deaths till date. A total of seven persons tested positive for swine flu on Sunday, while reports of 14 patients are awaited, said Dr Ashok Mehta, joint director of state health services.

Sondkar was admitted to Deenanath Mangeshkar Hospital after he complained of severe cold and cough. He tested positive for swine flu and was shifted to Sassoon Hospital on September 13. He was on ventilator and died on Sunday.

Sonkamble was admitted to Bharati and Sanjivani Hospitals before being shifted to Sassoon. She was brought to Sassoon on Saturday and put on ventilator. She died at 4.30 pm on Saturday.

“Both Sonkamble and Sondkar were showing signs of acute respiratory distress
syndrome,” Mehta said.

A total of 21 patients are in intensive care units and 10 are on ventilator. The number of patients in hospital has increased from 158 last Sunday to 210 this Sunday. Sixty patients have been discharged from hospitals.

NAGPUR: Ajay Chaudhary, a 32-year-old resident of Anant Nagar who had tested positive for swine flu and was on dialysis at the Government Medical
College and Hospital (GMCH), died of acute respiratory distress at 12.45 am on Sunday. He was on ventilator for the past two days. This was the second confirmed swine flu death in city within a week.
The cause of two earlier deaths, a 24-year-old girl and a 41-yearold man, could not be known as their samples were spoilt in transit to NIV, Pune. Chaudhary was admitted at the superspecialty hospital of GMCH for regular dialysis treatment on September 12. He was shifted to isolation ward on Saturday after his blood and swab reports arrived from NIV and he tested positive.

He did not have any history of travelling to Pune or Mumbai or any direct contact with a person with flu-like symptoms. Another 40-year-old woman, Phulabai M Chaudhary, a resident of Abhyankar Nagar who was admitted to the isolation ward also died of acute respiratory distress at 8.40 pm Saturday night. But she had tested negative for H1N1. “We did not inform the media about her death as she had tested negative,” said Dr A Niswade, acting dean of GMCH. She was brought to GMCH from Lata Mangeshkar Hospital on ventilator and was in the ward for two days. Two more patients, both boys between age 10-13 were admitted on Sunday after screening in the flu out patient department (OPD) taking the number of admitted patients to 12. Of these, only one is a known positive case.

Presently three children, including a 10-year-old boy (tested positive) from Hudkeshwar, are admitted to GMCH. Due to space constraint the other two boys have been admitted to the paediatrics ward. No patient is on ventilator. On Sunday, relatives of some patients entered into heated arguments with the GMCH staff . “The relatives were told there was no need to collect samples of patient as they did not have any symptom.

But they insisted that samples be taken,” said Niswade appealing for cooperation from public. “Our resident doctors are working hard but relatives have been regularly creating such problems. Police had to be called on Wednesday after death of a patient," he said.

Ahmednagar, Sept 21 (PTI) A 40-year-old woman died of swine flu in the state, taking the toll due to the viral infection in Maharashtra to 104, health officials said today.

Social worker and leader of Medical Representatives Association Ambadas Shivaratri, who hailed from Ahmednagar, died of swine flu last night at a Pune hospital.

He was admitted to Munot-Sahyadri Hospital in Pune about a fortnight ago with flu-like symptoms, they said.

Mumbai, Sep 22 (PTI) A total of 107 persons have died of swine flu so far in Maharashtra, a health official said today.

Till date, 7,75,038 people have been examined for swine flu, with 36,140 suspected patients being administered Tamiflu, the official said.

The number of persons who tested positive for the H1N1 influenza is 2,843, of which 2,616 have been cured and discharged.

Altogether 428 persons, including 120 positive and 308 suspected cases, are being treated at various hospitals in the state, the official said.

Man dies of swine flu in Nagpur

Nagpur, Sep 22 (PTI) A 31-year-old man today succumbed to swine flu in the city, official sources said.

The deceased has been identified as Rahul Rinde, a resident of Manewada here.

Another patient Nisha Sharma (21), a resident of Chindawada in neighbouring Madhya Pradesh, died of suspected swine flu, the sources added.

Maharashtra, the worst hit state by the pandemic, has recorded over 100 H1NI flu deaths till now, with Pune alone accounting for over half of them.
