    Thiruvananthapuram, Aug 28 (PTI) Two more persons undergoing treatment for swine flu died in Kerala taking the total number of H1N1 influenza deaths to three in the state today.

    A seven-year-old boy died at a hospital in Kottayam today while a woman (44) died at a private hospital in Kochi yesterday, an official release said here today.

    A 35-year-old man had died in a private hospital here on August 11, becoming the first swine flue fatality in the state.

    Twenty-six new cases of swine flu have been reported from different parts of the state since yesterday, taking the total number of cases in the state to 191. As of today, 35 patients were under treatment for the flu, the release said.

    Kottayam: The swine flu claimed the life of a 7-year boy, Ansal in Kottayam,The boy had undergone treatment at children’s Hospital, nearby Medical College in Kottayam and was belong to Pathanamthitta Dist. With this death, the statewide flu toll climbed to 3.





    Swine flu toll rises to three in State


    THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: With the death of a nine-year-old boy at the Institute of Child Health (ICH) attached to the Kottayam Medical College Hospital (MCH) on Friday, swine flu has claimed three lives in the State.
    Ansil Mohammad of Nooranad, Adoor (Pathanamthitta district), had arrived from Abu Dhabi on August 19 and was admitted to the ICH on August 26. His throat swab was sent to the Rajiv Gandhi Centre for Biotechnology (RGCB), Thiruvananthapuram, the next day and was diagnosed positive.
    The boy, who was suffering from cerebral palsy, had severe lung congestion. He was admitted to the intensive care unit and was having ventilator support. His end came at 4.30 p.m. on Friday. The boy’s two-year-old sibling is also undergoing treatment for H1N1 flu at the ICH.
    Second victim A woman who was admitted to a private hospital in Kochi four days ago with fever and severe respiratory illness succumbed to the illness on Thursday. Jijamma, 44, a resident of Karakkadayil House, Elenji, Ernakulam, died at 3 p.m. at the Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences (AIMS). She was referred to the AIMS from Karithas Hospital, Kottayam, with fever and respiratory illness after treatment at a local clinic.
    According to the Additional Director of Health Services, (Public Health), the patient was in a serious condition with high fever and respiratory distress on arrival at the AIMS at 1 a.m. on August 24. She was put on ventilator support at the ICU with a ‘presumed diagnosis of suspected H1N1.’ Bronchial washings were sent to Kasturba Medical College, Manipal, for test. “The result of the test was positive,” the Additional Director said.
    On August 11, 33-year-old Wilson Lukose of Vettucaud had succumbed to the illness.

      [xray showed both lungs deeply affected] Put on Tamiflu.
      8/27: Died. No underlying conditions.



      First swine flu death in district

      KOCHI: The 44-year-old woman who died on Thursday in a hospital here has been confirmed to have died of Influenza A (H1N1). This is the first death by the flu in the district. Jijamma was admitted to the Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences on reference from Carithas Hospital, Kottayam, early Monday morning. The patient had fever and respiratory tract problems. The patient was put under ventilator but looked very sick, said the physician who attended the case. The X-ray showed that both lungs were deeply affected. Though she was immediately started on Tamiflu and other antibiotics, the patient never showed any signs of improvement, said the doctor.
      She did not have any other record of diseases, said the doctor.
      The patient had first gone to a local hospital for treating fever.
      But after three days when she started showing signs of complications, she was sent to Carithas on Sunday. As they did not have ventilator facility they referred the patient to Amrita.
      The patient?s brother said that she had not travelled to any place other than a few kms in and around their residence.
      She had contact with her relatives who had arrived here from the Gulf.

      A child had some slight fever at the time but she is doing fine now, said the brother. It was rather a shock to know the cause of the disease, he added. The deceased is survived by her husband, a son ? working abroad and a daughter in school.
      The Deputy District Medical Officer, K. B. Peethambaram, said that the medical officers at the nearest Primary Health Centre had supervised the prophylactic measures for those who had been in contact with the deceased. The Health officials have also given advice on burial guidelines and minimal handling of the deceased.
