PUNE: Delayed diagnosis resulted in two swine flu deaths in the city on Monday. Both the victims were from villages around Pune and had come to the city for treatment.

Since January, six people have succumbed to the virus. Of them, three cases were reported in March alone. Meanwhile, six more people tested positive for the contagion on Tuesday, said a health official of the Pune Municipal Corporation ( PMC).

Fifty-five-year old Hanumant Ghule, a resident of village Bopkhel, died at the Ruby Hall Clinic at 2.15 am. Laxman Ahiwale, 65, a resident of Sahajpur (taluka Daund) died at Nobel hospital in Hadapsar at 5.12 pm. In both the cases, the detection happened late because the patients delayed approaching the doctors.

Spurt in H1N1 deaths in state, 20 dead since Jan

PUNE: Swine flu has claimed 20 lives in the state since January, nine in March alone, say state health officials.

Among the total number of casualties, Pune district accounts for the highest number (10), said state surveillance officer Pradip Awate. "Six people died of H1N1 influenza within Pune municipal limits while four were from Pimpri-Chinchwad ," he added.

Following the recent spurt in cases, doctors have warned citizens to be vigilant and take precautionary measures. "The virus has infected 170 people across the state since January," said Awate.

Of the nine people who succumbed to the contagion in March, three were from Pune city. Nagpur registered two deaths and one death each was recorded in Thane, Pimpri-Chinchwad , Nashik and Aurangabad . "The behaviour pattern of influenza viruses has been unpredictable. Hence, it is difficult to categorically pinpoint reasons for the spurt, said Mandeep Chadha, deputy director, National Institute of Virology ( NIV).

Five-month-old baby dies of swine flu
Express news service : Thu Mar 21 2013, 02:50 hrs

A five-month-old baby from Bhimpura lane in Pune Camp area has become the latest victim of the swine flu virus in the state.

The death of the baby is the first among the paediatric age group registered by the Pune Municipal Corporation health authorities from January this year.

The baby was suffering from fever, cough and cold as well as sore throat from March 16. According to PMC health officials, the baby was treated at the outpatient department of Jehangir hospital and advised immediate admission. However, the baby was admitted only on March 18, after it displayed more symptoms like breathlessness. It died the same day. According to doctors, the baby died due to cardio-respiratory arrest and broncho-pneumonia, along with septic shock and multi-organ dysfunction. This is the seventh death registered at PMC hospitals, since January this year. Last year, too, a sudden spurt had seen a sharp rise in the number of swine flu cases in March.

4 patients infected with H1N1; critical

PUNE: As many as 15 people infected with swine flu are being treated at different hospitals in Pune, while the condition of four patients down with the contagion is critical. All of them have been put on ventilator support.

"The critical patients are from areas in and around Pune. They have presented with severe symptoms of swine flu. In some cases, the patients delayed in seeking medical treatment, and this led to worsening of their condition," said a health official of Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC)

Taking medicine without consultation and delaying treatment can aggravate the condition. Health officials said the increase in the swine flu cases could be due to widely fluctuating and erratic climate and temperatures characterized by hotter days and colder nights experienced at present in the region.
